Talk:Endowment (Mormonism)

Proposed Citation Standardization

Per WP:CITEVAR it's best to have a unified citation style on an article. Since the vast majority (50+ sources) on this article use "cite x" format, and the remaining 6 primary sources mostly from the 1800s are in "harv" format and listed under the "References" section, is there any objections to moving those last remaining sources to the principal citation style of this article? Alternatively, doing the reverse to 50+ sources sounds wayy more tedious to me, but if someone feels very strongly they can propose to do that themselves. Any objections? Clarify that the second anointing is not part of the Endowment

The article states in the first paragraph, "In Mormonism, the endowment is a two-part ordinance (ceremony)". In the second paragraph it states, "The second part of the endowment, called the second anointing..."

This is not correct. It should read something like "A separate ritual called The Second Anointing is sometimes administered to those who have received their Endowment." Please correct.

Details later in the article correctly clarify that the Endowment consists of (a) the washing and anointing and (b) the instruction and testing. The Second Anointing is not part of this. This conforms to the official explanation per the Handbook of Instructions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:

"The endowment is received in two parts. In the first part, a person receives preliminary ordinances called the initiatory. The initiatory comprises three ordinances: washing, anointing, and clothing (see Exodus 29:4–9). It includes special blessings related to the person’s divine heritage and potential. During the initiatory, the member is instructed to wear the temple garment. The garment is a sacred symbol of Jesus Christ. It is also a reminder of temple covenants. When members keep their covenants, including the sacred privilege to wear the garment as instructed, they will have greater access to the Savior’s mercy, protection, strength, and power. For more information about the garment, see 38.5. In the second part of the endowment, the plan of salvation is taught, including the Creation, the Fall of Adam and Eve, and the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Members also receive instruction on how to return to the Lord’s presence."

Thank you for bringing the confusing wording to others' attention. I have updated the article to clarify the difference between the first endowment, second endowment, and historical endowments with sources. Hopefully, that adequately resolved the unclear wording from before while still being comprehensive in addressing the way the term endowment has multiple meanings in the LDS community.
