Bay Atlantic University Bay Atlantic University (BAU) is a private, non-profit institution established in 2014 in Washington, D.C.. The university offers degree programs primarily in Business, Politics, and STEM fields, guided by its motto "Peace through Education."

History

Bay Atlantic University was founded in 2014 as a private, non-profit institution in Washington, D.C.. It was licensed by the District of Columbia Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) on May 2, 2014, and enrolled its first MBA cohort in the fall of that year.[1] The university held its first commencement ceremony in May 2016. In 2017, the institution began enrolling undergraduate students in programs such as Political Science and Economics. The institution's name was officially changed from "BAU International University" to "Bay Atlantic University" in January 2019. [2] BAU was granted initial accreditation by the NECHE on March 9, 2023.[3]

Campus

Bay Atlantic University's campus is located at 1510 H St NW in downtown Washington, D.C..[4] Its location near the White House and in the central business district provides access to various U.S. government agencies, embassies, NGOs, and international institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The campus facilities include classrooms, a library, computer laboratories, a student union, and a writing center. It also houses the Global Policy Institute (GPI)[5][6][7], a think tank focused on international security, economics, and global affairs.[8]

Student Housing

The university offers student housing at the Island Condos complex in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C., which is approximately four miles from the main campus.[9] The university offers a shuttle bus service connecting the housing complex with the main campus.

Study Abroad and Global Network

Bay Atlantic University is a member of the BAU Global Education Network, which is comprised of five universities and two language schools across multiple continents.[10] This network facilitates academic exchange and enables students to study at affiliated institutions as part of their academic programs.

The university maintains bilateral academic agreements with international institutions for student and faculty exchange programs, as well as collaborative research initiatives.[11] Key partner institutions include:

Academics

Bay Atlantic University is organized into schools that offer bachelor's and master's degree programs, in addition to an English language division.

School of Business

The School of Business offers undergraduate and graduate programs focused on foundational business principles, leadership, and analytics.[1][12]

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Business Administration and Management.
  • Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with a curriculum covering core areas like finance, marketing, and leadership.
  • Dual Master's Program: An MBA paired with an M.S. in Big Data Analytics.

School of Information Science and Engineering (SISE)

SISE focuses on STEM fields, including information technology, software development, and data analysis.[1][12]

Mentora College

Mentora College is the university's intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) division.[13] It offers a range of accredited English language programs for adult and youth learners, including intensive and semi-intensive courses, as well as standardized examinations such as TOEFL and IELTS.

Mentora College is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).[14] Its curriculum is aligned with the six proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (A1 to C2).

Library

The university library maintains a limited physical collection, with its primary resources provided electronically through access to the Bahcesehir University Barbaros Library network. This partnership provides students with access to over 90 major databases, including those offered ProQuest and EBSCO, and licenses for over 55,000 full-text journals and hundreds of thousands of e-books.[15]

Accreditation and Rankings

  • Accreditation: Bay Atlantic University is accredited by the NECHE[3] and is licensed to operate by the District of Columbia Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC).[16] It is also authorized by the SEVP to enroll international students. [17]

Campus Life

Bay Atlantic University is influenced by its location in downtown Washington, D.C., and its diverse international student body.

  • Student Organizations and Activities: Student life revolves around both academic and social engagement, which is supported by student-led organizations. The Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the official representative body for students, advocating for their interests and helping to foster cultural diversity. Other student-led groups, which require a minimum of 10 members and a designated lead, reflect a variety of interests, such as film, book, music, soccer, yoga, conversation, photography, dance, and arts.
  • Cultural and Social Events: The university hosts events and activities aimed at raising cultural awareness and promoting inclusion. These include celebrations such as the Lunar New Year, Black History Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month, as well as domestic celebrations like Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Director of Student Services organizes field trips and excursions that utilize the city's resources, including sporting events, theater performances, concerts, and museum visits.
  • Civic Engagement: The university encourages students to participate in civic life and volunteer with organizations throughout the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Campus Facilities: On-campus facilities that contribute to student life include the Dolphin Coffee [21] shop and the Bay, a student lounge designed for studying and relaxation. The university does not offer varsity sports.
