Definition of Piracy
Now that the definition of Piracy in maritime law has been added to the lead, please don't add incidents to this article's examples of piracy that do not meet this definition, unless first reaching a consensus on this Talk page. @Anarcominimalista: @IvanScrooge98: @MJL's Evil Sister: Thanks. - Alright. Not that the one I had added was really far off from the definition. State crimes are a thing, after all. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 22:05, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, of course state crimes are a thing. For example, if the navy of one country seized without cause a ship in international waters sailing under the flag of another country, that would violate UNCLOS articles 87(1)(a) and 88. But it would not be piracy. Piracy consists of illegal acts for private gain. If there were a Wikipedia article with a list of toaster ovens, you wouldn't add a blender to the list, arguing that "kitchen appliances are a thing", no matter how strongly you felt that more people need to hear about this particular blender.
- If the scope of the article were to change to "21st century violations of the Law of the Sea in international waters", or if the definition of Piracy changed, that would be different. Until then, a blender is not a toaster oven.
