Growth of Pesticide Usage
Thanks for adding the graph. I see you got it from the 2025 FAO yearbook, which I will use to update the data I had put in to that section from the 2023 yearbook and other sources. However the graph does not show recent very interesting developments. Table 15 (page 154) and table 16 (page 159) show a reduction in usage both total in tonnes and g/ha in the world. This is the case also for Europe, Americas and Asia. This reduction is probably due to the huge growth of biologics (see biopesticide ) in recent years, now 10% of the pesticide market. The data on biologics on that page is in $, but tonnage makes little sense for biologics. Unfortunately the report makes no comment on this in the text. So anyway in my opinion the graph you added, which gives the impression of a continuous steady increase, is misleading. You are certainly better connected with the FAO than I am. Can you enquire about this point? Do you know who to ask? I will hold off on updating the amounts for the meantime. best regards. Bosula (talk) 23:10, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
- On having another look at the report I see that table 17 shows the amount used in more detail. You see the development year by year, and we see the levelling off and dropping in the last couple of years. So I will replace table 18, which you put in with table 17. The developments in total amount and g/ha are more or less equivalent, as seen by comparing Tables 15 and 16. Bosula (talk) 17:28, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
- Ah. Excuse me. I see you had already put table 17 in. In that case I will delete table 18 for the reasons given above. Bosula (talk) 17:38, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Bosula thank you for your message, yes please do whatever you think is best. John Cummings (talk) 17:47, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hello John, in the meantime I contacted the statistical department of the FAO. They kindly sent me links to documents they produced which are more focused on pesticides. I will copy the links here in case you are interested. https://doi.org/10.4060/cd5968en https://doi.org/10.4060/cd3749en . https://doi.org/10.4060/cd1486en, best regards Bosula (talk) 19:19, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
