Victoria County History

Srbernadette, a reference to the Victoria County History article at https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/oxon/vol3/pp351-353 has just been added. I can't find the quoted text Society of Home-Students working with the Lady Margaret Hall Settlement and the Principal of the Society from 1940 to 1953 (Eleanor Plumer) had previously been Warden of the Mary Ward Settlement (1923-1927) in the article, do you have the correct source and the full sentence? to me
Dear Michael,
Thank you for your enquiry, which I can pick up now that I’m back from leave.
I would say it’s very likely that that students from the Oxford Society of Home-Students were working with or connected with the Women's University Settlement (later Blackfriars Settlement) from 1903.
However, I haven’t been able to locate anything the archive that categorically confirms this. In our published history of St Anne’s there are references to the Society of Home-Students working with the Lady Margaret Hall Settlement and the Principal of the Society from 1940 to 1953 (Eleanor Plumer) had previously been Warden of the Mary Ward Settlement (1923-1927).
As you say, there definitely seemed to be strong connections between the Oxford women’s colleges and the London Settlements.
It looks like the records of the Blackfriars Settlement are now held as part of the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/6847656d-c397-4970-9af2-a675320a0557
It’s possible they may be able to confirm the names of those who worked or volunteered there.
I hope that’s of some help. Do let me know if you any further questions.
Best wishes,
Matthew

Srbernadette, thank you, I have updated the reference accordingly. I think "our published history of St Anne’s" is probably
Marjorie Reeves, St Anne's College, Oxford: An Informal History (Oxford: St Anne's College, 1979),
but there is another possibility at https://oac.web.ox.ac.uk/st-annes-college.
I still don't think the Middleton related material is important enough to the history of the college to be included in the history section. TSventon (talk) 22:06, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Middleton family content

About half of the section about the Society of Oxford Home-Students (1879–1942) relates to members of the Middleton family (relatives of Catherine, Princess of Wales). Only one of the four attended the college. I don't believe any of it is relevant to this article, what do other editors think? The paragraphs concerned begin

  • From 1898 till 1906, the Society of Home Students saw some of its members in residence at Wychwood School, then situated at 77 Banbury Road. See note 15, Gertrude Middleton lived at 77 Banbury Road.
  • Picture including Gertrude Middleton and Olive Middleton
  • Early students of the college included the great-great aunt of Catherine, Princess of Wales. About Gertrude Middleton and Margaret Middleton.
  • The first woman Hon. Lady Secretary of the Association for the Education of Women was Charlotte Green whose husband T.H. Green had also acted as secretary to the association in the 1870s. See note 22, Dorothy Frances Middleton worked at the Women's University Settlement, Blackfriars Road.

The fact about Gertrude attending is fair enough, but I would take out the photograph and the sentence about Margaret Middleton, and then trim the notes greatly. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 14:53, 13 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I might go further and take it the references to Gertrude as well. She's not independently notable – the wl redirects to the Middleton family article. That a non-notable relative of a notable person attended is not really worth mentioning. Robminchin (talk) 17:22, 13 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonathan A Jones and Robminchin: thank you, I agree with Robminchin, so I have removed everything except a mention of Margaret Lee, one of the college's first four tutors. That reduced the size of the article in bytes by 25%, which shows how excessive the Middleton content was. TSventon (talk) 12:00, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. Bram880 (talk) 12:18, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Accommodation

@Bram880: do you know whether the college offers two or three years of undergraduate accommodation? An IP has just changed it. The website seems to say three and up to three, so I would assume that the lower figure is correct. The available accommodation may be affected by the Bevington Road Refurbishment project. TSventon (talk) 18:52, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - as you suggest, I understand that the refurbishment of the college properties on Bevington Road has reduced the availability of accommodation for undergraduates:
