Renaming article
I suggest renaming the article for Belarusian democracy movement in late Soviet and post-Soviet periods - to differenciate from the earlier democratic movements and projects, e.g. Belarusian People's Republic. Any thoughts? --Nieszczarda2 (talk) 08:32, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Belarusian democracy movement → Belarusian opposition – Per WP:COMMONNAME. The name "Belarusian democracy movement" is not much used outside Wikipedia. For example, on Google News there are 9 total results for "Belarusian democracy movement" compared to around 40 just in the last week for "Belarusian opposition". The latter term is commonly used according to Google Ngrams and almost exclusively refers to the subject of this article, whereas the former one doesn't show up. In case there is any need for disambiguation (I think it's clear what the primary topic is for "Belarusian opposition"), the article could be renamed "Belarusian opposition (1988–present)". Belarusian opposition → Opposition to Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus – More consistent with Opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia. The article needs to be more specific, if Lukashenko will be replaced in the future the "Belarusian opposition" might mean a completely different thing. The info about opposition to Soviet Belarus needs to be moved to a different article about Belarusian independence movement, Belarus was not even a sovereign country then and this info does not belongs in the same page as opposition to Lukashenko. - Oppose Unneeded verbosity - the current title is fine and the reasoning for this proposal amounts to little more than speculation. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:52, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:CONCISE, as the current title does unambiguously identify the article's subject, while being more concise than the proposal. I have doubts on the validity of the Opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia argument: when you enter the article, it clearly states that it is
commonly referred to as the Russian opposition
. The only reason that name is not currently used seems to be a failed RM (in 2017) that saw no consensus for a move under low participation, and the current title seems to have been a (rather undiscussed and unilateral, there was no specific consensus for that proposal) result of that RM ([1]). Also, the wording of that article is complicated by the fact that some opposition figures are abroad in exile (thus, not "in Russia"), and that the same happens for some opposition figures in Belarus. Probably there are more reasons to evaluate whether "Opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia" is an adequate title than to use it as reference for maintaining consistency elsewhere. In that regard (consistency), we do have Venezuelan opposition, Iranian opposition, Cuban dissident movement...
