Production
Development
In October 2012, Sony Pictures announced that a film adaptation of the Little House on the Prairie novel was under development.[3] In early 2016, it was reported that Paramount Pictures had picked up the project in turnaround, but an agreement was never reached.[4][5]
The series is produced by Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions and adapted from the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A previous series of the same name, which ran for over 200 episodes on NBC between 1974 and 1983, was produced by his father, Ed Friendly. The series, commissioned by Netflix in January 2025, has Rebecca Sonnenshine as showrunner.[6] Production is expected to run between June and October in Winnipeg, Canada. The director is Sarah Adina Smith and executive producers are also Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel.[7]
Speaking in February 2025, actress Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls Wilder on the entire run of the earlier series, said she had no issue with the new adaptation and that there was "plenty of room" for "someone else's interpretation".[8] Original cast members Alison Arngrim and Dean Butler told ReMIND Magazine the new series would be more focused on the original books, rather than a reboot of their series.[9] They also responded to the social media reaction from commentator Megyn Kelly, who had posted on Twitter that "if you wokeify Little House on the Prairie I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project."[9] Members of the original cast responded by pointing out that the original series addressed topics that would be considered "woke" today, such as racism, addiction, nativism, antisemitism, misogyny, rape, spousal abuse and other topics.[9][10][11] In the context of the planned Netflix remake, a journalist for The Ankler revisited the tension between producer Ed Friendly, who wanted the original series to be a close adaptation of the books, and Landon, who saw it more as a vehicle for telling modern stories, and questioned how the new series would resolve the interests of new and older audiences, against the backdrop of the continued popularity of the original series.[12] The series was renewed for a second season on March 3, 2026.[13]
Casting
An open casting call for the main role of young Laura and other main cast members was announced in March 2025.[14] In April 2025, 10 year-old actress Alice Halsey was cast in the role of Laura Ingalls,[15] with Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes cast the following month in the roles of Charles, Caroline, and Mary respectively.[16] Later cast were Warren Christie as John Edwards, Meegwun Fairbrother as Mitchell, Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle, Alyssa Wapanatǎhk as White Sun and Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann.[17] In July 2025, Mary Holland and Barrett Doss were amongst seven more additions to the cast.[18]
Filming
Principal photography began on June 10, 2025, and expected to film from June to October 2025.[14][19][20] Filming locations include Winnipeg, Canada.[21]
Release
Little House on the Prairie is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 9, 2026.[13]
