Summary

Description
English: The War Memorial was commissioned following the Civil War to honor both the veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The plaque showing the Return of the Troops may have shown them ascending the steps of the Massachusetts Statehouse and includes a self-portrait of the sculptor Cyrus Dallin in the lower left. While it honors the soldiers, it also is a reminder of the cost of war in the fatigued returning soldiers.
