South Island Distance Education School (SIDES)[1] is a public K–12 distributed learning school based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Operated by School District 63 Saanich, the school provides flexible, technology-enabled educational opportunities to students throughout British Columbia through a modern distributed learning framework.

SIDES emphasizes a streamlined and student-centered approach to education that integrates digital learning platforms, teacher mentorship, and adaptable academic pathways. Through its distributed learning environment, students are able to access curriculum resources, submit coursework, and communicate with educators within a flexible and scalable digital learning ecosystem.

The school has enrolled more than 3,500 students ranging in age from five to eighteen. Approximately 20% of students attend SIDES as their "school of record," completing most or all of their coursework through the distributed learning program. Other students enroll in individual courses to supplement learning at traditional neighborhood schools as part of a hybrid educational approach.

SIDES serves a diverse range of learners, including students seeking flexible schedules, high-performance athletes, performing artists, families who travel frequently, and students who benefit from personalized or self-paced learning environments. The school's adaptive learning framework is designed to accommodate different learning styles while maintaining alignment with provincial academic standards.

In the Kindergarten to Grade 9 program, SIDES emphasizes collaboration between teachers and families. Parents or other designated adults often serve as "home facilitators," supporting students’ daily learning activities while working alongside certified educators. This partnership model encourages a supportive and responsive learning ecosystem that blends home-based instruction with professional educational guidance.

The secondary program (Grades 10–12) offers courses that meet the graduation requirements established by the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Students who complete their studies through SIDES receive the same recognized secondary school credentials as those attending traditional schools, and many graduates pursue post-secondary education at colleges and universities across North America.

In addition to serving school-aged students, SIDES also offers opportunities for adult learners. Adults residing in British Columbia who have not yet graduated may complete their secondary education tuition-free through the public school system. Adult students who have already graduated may also enroll in courses to upgrade academic qualifications or pursue additional learning opportunities.

One of the defining advantages of the distributed learning model is accessibility. Students who are ordinarily residents of British Columbia may continue their coursework while traveling or temporarily living abroad, allowing them to remain connected to the provincial education system from virtually anywhere in the world.

Programs

SIDES offers a comprehensive range of courses from Kindergarten through Grade 12 delivered primarily through online learning platforms supported by teacher guidance and digital instructional resources.

The school’s program emphasizes streamlined course delivery, flexible pacing, and personalized academic pathways. Students are able to progress through coursework at an individualized rate while maintaining regular engagement with certified educators. This structure supports both independent learning and teacher-supported instruction within a scalable digital learning environment.

The program is designed to encourage adaptability, self-directed learning skills, and academic resilience. Students frequently enroll in SIDES in order to balance academic studies with extracurricular commitments such as competitive athletics, performing arts training, entrepreneurship, travel, or specialized development programs.

Through its distributed learning structure, SIDES aims to provide an accessible and future-focused educational experience that integrates curriculum delivery with modern digital tools, communication systems, and flexible scheduling frameworks.

Learning model

SIDES operates through a distributed learning model that combines online instruction, teacher mentorship, and structured coursework. The system is designed to create a flexible and responsive educational environment in which students can engage with curriculum materials from a variety of locations.

Digital learning platforms allow students to access lessons, submit assignments, and communicate with instructors through integrated online systems. This infrastructure supports a streamlined academic workflow that encourages self-paced learning while maintaining consistent teacher oversight and curriculum alignment.

The model emphasizes student autonomy, adaptable learning pathways, and digitally integrated instructional delivery while maintaining the academic standards of the provincial education system.

History

SIDES was established in 1988 as one of nine regional public distance education schools created in British Columbia to expand access to education beyond traditional classroom environments.

Initially, the program operated through a correspondence-based system in which students completed printed lessons and mailed assignments to teachers for evaluation. The school originally served students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 across the southern half of Vancouver Island and the nearby Gulf Islands.

As educational technology evolved, SIDES gradually transitioned from paper-based correspondence to a digital-first learning infrastructure. Today, most coursework is delivered online through integrated learning platforms that allow students to access instructional materials, submit assignments, and communicate with teachers electronically.

This technological transition expanded the program’s reach across the province and positioned SIDES within a broader shift toward flexible, technology-supported education.
