Speedy renaming and merging

If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria mentioned in C2, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.

If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.

Use the following format on a new line at the beginning of the list:

* :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

If the current name should be redirected rather than deleted, use:

* REDIRECT :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

To note that human action is required, e.g. updating a template that populates the category, use:

* NO BOTS :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

Remember to tag the category page with:

NEW NOMINATIONS

Category:Bangladeshi colorectal surgeons

Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. Also merge with Category:Bangladeshi surgeons.

Also propose merging:

Category:New Democratic Party of Canada politicians

Nominator's rationale: Category doesn't need to be disambiguated, the main article New Democratic Party isn't and the only other party by the same name is a minor one in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Official party name doesn't include of Canada unlike the Liberals or Conservative. If the category has to be disambiguated it should be renamed Category:New Democratic Party (Canada) politicians to reflect the official party name, otherwise the Category:New Democratic Party politicians is prefered. Category:Gion zukuri

Nominator's rationale: Seems to be a Japanese architectural style yet lacks an article page or any details. Not a useful category to keep around right now. There is only 1 article in the category and is also the eponymous article of the parent category (loop...). –Aidan721 (talk) 22:55, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

States and territories (dis)established in YYYY (pre-1000)

Nominator's rationale: All contain 1-2 articles. Largely spaced out categories before the year 1000. Not useful for navigation. WP:NARROW. –Aidan721 (talk) 22:39, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:2020s Argentine film stubs

Nominator's rationale: Underpopulated stub category without evidence of approval by WikiProject Stub sorting. As always, stub categories require 60 articles before they can be created, and for that reason should normally be approved by the Wikiproject rather than just being created willy-nilly -- but this has just 28, and there's no indication that it was ever submitted for approval before being created. And while I've added some of those 28 articles myself in the past few minutes by perusing Category:2020s Argentine films, the ratio of articles I've checked to articles I could actually add this to (because it was genuinely a stub and didn't already have this template and category on it) doesn't suggest that I'd be able to get this over 60.
The template is fine, as it can always just upfile its entries into the target category in the meantime, and obviously the category can be recreated if and when the template is on at least 60 articles, but 28 articles isn't enough to justify a dedicated stub category. Category:Salvadoran people of Sephardic-Jewish descent

Nominator's rationale: Dual merge; only one article. Omnis Scientia (talk) 04:39, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dual merge or delete, the latter because the only article says about the subject that her husband claimed that she has Sephardic-Jewish ancestors, I wonder if that is sufficient to keep the article in Jewish categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:39, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Historians of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Nominator's rationale: Both of these categories have two people in them. I'm not even sure if I'd call them historians. PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:10, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Chinese cults

Nominator's rationale: This category is about one specific thing (organizations officially designated as Heterodox teachings (Chinese law) per Chinese law, however it also contains things like Mango cult which is a different usage of the term. Unlike the other cult categories this is fine to keep because unlike other countries the Chinese government still maintains their cult list - see how we do Category:Terrorist organizations as Category:Organizations designated as terrorist for example, same reason. This is far clearer. PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:44, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Subcategorize with the new category. "Chinese cults" can be built up, since several Qing Dynasty cults caused major rebellions, and in the Ming, etc. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 04:11, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, because cults from past centuries have nothing to do with the modern conception. That would be categorizing every single chinese religion, which we have other categories for. "cult" as a word has many completely contradictory definitions which many people may want to categorize by for different reasons, and lumping them all into one thing like we used to do is not encyclopedic. The CCP categorizes them based on deviance and antisocial behavior - what does that have in common with worship from centuries past? PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:21, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom, as a more accurate description. We should nor build up "Chinese cults" after we recently built down Category:Cults. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:47, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Accidents and incidents involving the CRJ 900

Nominator's rationale: WP:C2C renaming to align with other sub-categories within the Category:Aviation accidents and incidents by aircraft, that list the manufacturer's name prior to the aircraft type. See Category:Accidents and incidents involving the Bombardier CRJ200 or Category:Accidents and incidents involving the Airbus A320. Epluribusunumyall (talk) 23:17, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Template:1930s-Cuba-film-stub

Nominator's rationale: Unused stub template of unclear necessity. Countries with a lot of film articles to worry about, so that a single stub category would be populated into the high hundreds or thousands, are allowed to have decade-country intersection stub templates and categories, but they aren't a thing that automatically needs to exist for every country across the board.
Category:Cuban film stubs only has 72 articles in it total, however, which is not nearly enough to need comprehensive stub sorting by decade: no other decade templates exist at all but this, there would need to be a lot more than 72 films before any were needed, and even this hasn't actually been added to any films at all. Bearcat (talk) 17:54, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Books translated into Nahuatl

Nominator's rationale: Single-entry category for a non-defining characteristic. Since any book can be translated into any language at any time, there's no value in categorizing books for translated-into languages -- that would just lead to extreme category bloat, as each individual book was added to dozens, or sometimes even hundreds, of categories for translated-into languages. So we categorize literature for the language it was originally written in, not for languages it's been translated into after the fact. Bearcat (talk) 17:27, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Judoka coaches

Nominator's rationale: One-person category at an incorrect name. The sport is called judo, while a judoka is an individual practitioner of judo rather than the sport as a whole -- so a person who coaches the judokas would be a "judo coach", not a "judoka coach".
As we don't appear to have Category:Judo coaches at all yet, this could also be salvaged by moving it to that name if somebody with more knowledge of the subject than I've got can find other people who could be filed in it, but it needs to be deleted if the one person filed here now is all there is. Bearcat (talk) 17:10, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch, I didn't realize that. Merger probably even better than deletion, as this might happen again in the future. Bearcat (talk) 17:40, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Mostly 1-3 articles per category. Not useful for navigation. WP:NARROW. –Aidan721 (talk) 16:52, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People from Scigliano

Nominator's rationale: Category for people from a small town without enough people from it to need a dedicated category. As always, every town that exists does not automatically get one of these the moment one notable person from there has an article to file in it -- there would need to be at least five people in it before a town-level category was needed, and short of five the province level is all that's required.
For added bonus, the one person who was filed in here when I first found it was not stated or sourced anywhere in his article as being "from" Scigliano at all (it said he was born in a completely different town not even in the same region of Italy, let alone anywhere near Scigliano, and then completely failed to mention Scigliano anywhere besides the category), so he had to be removed -- but while perusing Scigliano's "what links here" did find two other people who could be filed here to stave off immediate speedy, two articles isn't enough to justify actually keeping it, and even if the article I removed could be properly sourced back into it, three articles still wouldn't be enough either. Category:The Apprentice contestants

Nominator's rationale: Just seems to be full of celebrities known for other things, which is not WP:DEFINING for them, and falls foul of WP:PERFCAT. --woodensuperman 10:10, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just looking at the Irish and the British ones and, for the most part, these do seem to actually be people who were made famous by their participation in the series. Not so much the Australian one, although there do seem to be a couple. On closer inspection, maybe we should purge of people who were already notable before their appearances (in all of the national variation subcategories), and certainly not include any Celebrity Apprentice participants? --woodensuperman 08:50, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:New Brunswick New Democratic Party leadership elections in New Brunswick

Nominator's rationale: WP:C2C renaming to align with other provincial NDP Categories in Category:New Democratic Party provincial leadership elections. Epluribusunumyall (talk) 08:30, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom. Also the "in New Brunswick" part is just redundant, as the first part of the category name already specifies "New Brunswick New Democratic Party" as it is — the NBNDP would never be holding leadership elections in Nova Scotia, Alberta or Michigan, now, would it? Bearcat (talk) 16:53, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Fictional historical detectives

Nominator's rationale: The criterion is rather hazy and not explicitly defined. What is "historical"? Lord Darcy (character) is set in the 20th century. Sherlock Holmes, who isn't listed, is sleuthing in the late 19th-early 20th century. Phryne Fisher is 20th century. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:27, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, historical novels are a thing, and by extension we might accept historical detectives as works. But the category contains characters instead of works and it is entirely unclear how to define a historical character. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:00, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Relations of colonizer and former colony

Nominator's rationale: This seems like an extremely problematic category, and rather inherently so. Defining "colonizer" is impossible; the way articles are currently listed, it seems that any country that once controlled any land belonging to another modern country is treated as a "colonizer" (one could argue that 40+ of the international relations of Italy deserve to be here, since there's no telling just how far back this goes). Given the impossibility of defining meaningful criteria for inclusion, just delete this. — Anonymous 21:27, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree that it's impossible to define; we rely on consensus to establish such definitions, per MOS:LABEL. If there are contentious additions they should be individually discussed imo. seefooddiet (talk) 22:46, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Seefooddiet, presumably, that would entail establishing consensus for each individual entry. In my opinion, this category is far too broad. How do we define colonialism? Sure, we can all agree that the United Kingdom colonized India. But what about historical subjugations that have only more recently gained recognition as instances of colonization, like the UK and Ireland? Nazi Germany certainly intended to colonize parts of the Soviet Union, but few would readily put such an instance of open warfare between two major powers on the same level as, for instance, France colonizing West Africa. And, more practically speaking, is this category useful? Even unambiguous cases of colonialism have not consistently affected modern-day relations between countries. The relationship between India and the UK is vastly different from the latter's relationship with places its population permanently settled in large numbers, such as the United States or Australia. What about cases where national identities as we know them today did not exist until well after colonization, like Spain and Panama? I could go on all day, but I think you get my point. — Anonymous 00:51, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Have been thinking about this; I think the category is definitely broad and there are definitely problematic entries. But I think the category as a whole meets all the criteria of Wikipedia:Categorization#Categorizing articles. The inclusion of modern countries that had a colonizer relationship hundreds of years ago is still somewhat defining and interesting; for example it's interesting and meaningful to understand the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom from a lens of post colonialism.
I'm not really sure what to do, but I'm not sure if a complete deletion is the answer either. I'll hold back from voting. seefooddiet (talk) 07:44, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Films by year of setting

Nominator's rationale: merge, isolated categories with 1-2 entries, this is not helpful for navigation. Category:Films set in 79 AD does not have to be merged because the subcategory is already in Category:Films set in 1st-century Roman Empire. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:06, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Of course it matters and that precise information should be written in the article. Categories have a different purpose though, they are for the benefit of quickly finding lots of other articles in the same period, in this case the 1590s. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:09, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But that's assuming a reader is looking for "films set in the 1590s" (which they can, by clicking on the category in which films set in 1596 can be found) and nothing more precise. So, even if we keep the category as it is, the reader can find a lot of films set in the 1590s quickly. I therefore still oppose the merge (and deletion). -Mushy Yank. 16:49, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Years in New York (state) politics

Nominator's rationale: Nominating the main category as well as its subcats. Years in New York (state) politics is the only category with subcats of its type dedicated to any U.S. state on Wikipedia. In my opinion, this is a form of overcat. I believe the categories of "Year in New York State" is enough to be used on articles in place of this main politics cat and its subcats. Articles for elections in New York state have already a category for it. I can't imagine any good use for this category or even other duplicate categories for the other 49 states and the five major U.S. territories.

Same could be said for articles for the politics of other countries' provinces, districts, regions, etc. for subdivision political matters. Also for all current 3,144 counties in each of the 50 states that have a county legislature and if articles were or do exist for laws in a certain county or other political matters for said counties.

It has only 1 member, Crnogorska Enciklopedija, and it is not expected this category will be populated by at least 5 items any time soon, if ever. Category:National encyclopedias

Nominator's rationale: Okay this might be difficult to explain, but here I go. I think 'national encyclopedia' is supposed to mean: an encyclopedia with contents primarily about one particular country. As such, it belongs in the Category:Works about countries tree (printed versions arguably in the Category:Books about countries subtree), and I propose to add that as a parent. I'm not sure what else it is supposed to mean, other than an WP:ARBITRARYCAT. For one thing, just calling an encyclopedia 'national' does not mean it is the *only* encyclopedia about that country, and has some sort of privileged and exclusive status. Even though one article might say The Canadian Encyclopedia is the national encyclopedia of Canada. (emphasis by me), another might say The Latvian National Encyclopedia is a universal encyclopedia in Latvian. (emphasis by me). In the end, though, both are just attempts to summarise encyclopedic knowledge of one country into one book, i.e. they are encyclopedias about countries. The latter describes this clearly: It is thematically focused on Latvian topics. The current contents of the category make clear that the encyclopedia in question does not have to have the word 'national' in the title, nor have to be published inside the country it is about, nor have to be published in the predominant or official language of that country (e.g. Ukraine: A Concise Encyclopaedia was published in English in Toronto, Canada, not in Ukrainian in Ukraine). So I think it makes sense, especially as long as there is no main article explaining that 'national encyclopedias' are anything other than 'encyclopedias about countries', the latter is a more precise and unambiguous catname, and fitting in the Category:Works about countries tree (as well as the Category:Specialized encyclopedias tree which it is already in).
It logically follows that its child Category:National Soviet encyclopedias should be renamed to Category:Encyclopedias about republics of the Soviet Union per its other parent Category:Categories by republic of the Soviet Union (this is a simple WP:C2C). It was always questionable whether such encyclopedias could even be considered 'national' or rather 'subnational'; the word 'republic' resolves that issue quite well in the rest of that category tree. Category:Uyghur genocide denial

Nominator's rationale: Considering Talk:Persecution of Uyghurs in China/FAQ and Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view/Noticeboard/Archive_96#"Genocide_denial"_and_Uyghurs, it seems that this category purely exists to workaround the established consensus. In addition it is blatantly violating multiple of the criteria noted in WP:BLPCAT.

Category names do not carry disclaimers or modifiers, so the case for each content category must be made clear by the article text and its verifiable reliable sources.

Just to take one example, the article Jodie Evans only mentions "In 2021, Evans described Uyghurs as "terrorists".

Caution should be used with content categories that suggest a person has a poor reputation (see false light). For example, Category:Criminals and its subcategories should be added only for an incident that is relevant to the person's notability; the incident was published by reliable third-party sources; the subject was convicted; and the conviction was not overturned on appeal. Do not categorize biographies of living people under such contentious topics as racism, sexism, extremism, and the like, since these have the effect of labeling a person as a racist, sexist, or extremist.

I think this doesn't need much explanation. One of the rare examples of a BLP being included in such a category is when they are mainly noted for their denial of crimes against humanity, e.g. "He is noted for his characterization of Auschwitz as a "labour camp", attracting allegations of Holocaust denial." Although for organizations the criteria are less strict, non of those listed exists with the main purpose for, or being most notable for, denying a genocide. Nominator's rationale: merge or reverse merge, largely overlapping categories. I have tagged them both. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:08, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • That raises a broader question: should all literature articles be both in a period by writing category and a period of setting category, also if these periods are the same? It seems overcategorization to me. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:01, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • How is that overcategorization? Is literature set in the United States and literature written by Americans overcategorization? Just lump both in as "Literature involving America"? -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 04:16, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Usually its setting is more precise, in a place or a county, so then it is different. I agree that "set in the United States" as such is redundant if it is written by an American writer. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:15, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • I have been pondering whether all fiction might usefully be divided between contemporary (the default), historical or futuristic. E.g. 1984 (novel) was futuristic even though its date of setting is now in our past. If this structure was adopted then the Tang dynasty literature articles (presumably with a contemporary setting) would not need to be also categorised as set in the Tang dynasty, and we would only need a separate category for historical fiction set in the Tang dynasty. – Fayenatic London 10:42, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
      • I would not presume that they are all set in the Tang Empire, instead of fantastical locations (the Court of Heaven, the Underworld, Paradise Island Penglai, etc), or the Han Dynasty, or Huaxia (the pre-dynastic semi-mythological past); or set in neighbouring regions outside of the Tang, such as former Han territories not within the Tang. There are several pieces of lit known to be set in Penghu, which at that time was outside China (later dynasties would incorporate it) -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 22:42, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Many Americans do not write stories set in the U.S. Which is why it should not be overcategorization. And as such, many writers of any place write (to them) historically placed literature. And of smaller countries, write about their bigger neighbors. Or write about the metaphysical. So I can't see why this would ever be overcategorization; especially when considering writers from time periods before the 19th century. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 22:34, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fiction set in ancient history

Nominator's rationale: merge, isolated and poorly-populated categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:47, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • The precision is in the articles. Categories serve a different purpose, namely to navigate to similar articles. If "similar" means a millennium or ancient history, in the context of a specific sort of fiction, so be it. Note that the articles will still be in categories of fiction by century. • Rename per nom. Someone should check the articles too. Bell (surname) and Byers (surname) seem to be plain English-language surnames. And it is not clear if Blomquist really deviates from an original Swedish form. But better have it checked by a native English speaker. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:37, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Listify - For the reasons illustrated above. This just looks like WP:OR (editors making a subjective determination for inclusion). This just cries out for explanations and references. Neither of which can be done with categories, per WP:BEFORECAT/WP:CLN. - jc37 17:53, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - As an aside, these fall under what I call "before and after" categories. (This was that, but now, it's this.) The clearest example of which is: renaming of people, companies, countries, etc. An article is one entry in a category. And can't show an individual relationship with another article (unless we started making innumerable 2-article categories). We should just establish that such categories are disallowed and are better as lists. Well... We do in WP:CLN#Disadvantages of a category, numbers 2 and 7 point to this, for example. But apparently we need to mke this clearer, I guess. - jc37 18:07, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment, I think it should be subsumed into Category:Anglicized surnames, because, as stated above, any “Americanization” would inherently be Anglicization. While I acknowledge that the category name could be debated and that an exception—similar to the one for Georgia—could be considered, I believe this should be addressed in a separate renaming discussion. My current proposal focuses solely on eliminating scope duplication. Later we can discuss whether an exception should be made for Palestine, similar to Georgia. However, this is a separate issue from the current redundancy. Additionally, the case of Georgia is different because Georgia is a disambiguation page, whereas Palestine is now the article about the modern state, with the disambiguation page moved to Palestine (disambiguation). --Hassan697 (talk) 20:40, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I think that graduates of USMA should definitely be in a category but also having categories by year would be extremely interesting to many people. 1915 has been written about as a special year but many other years are filled with historical figures and it’s interesting to see who were classmates. This can’t be done in the Alumni category. I was planning on starting other years as well and was hoping it may get other people to create other years. • If it is "interesting" then lists are more appropriate. Categories are for defining characteristics and "classmate of" is certainly not a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:52, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty hard to say that the class year that someone graduated from USMA isn't a defining characteristic. Especially since they were grouped together frequently in war time based on their classmates. Also, it is completely subjective to say that the year 1915 is better than any other year and can be included as a category and not other years. If this one has to go because there is no defining characteristic to a person then 1915 should go as well. To keep one and not the other would be non neutral and biased. Category:August 2023 sports events in Sri Lanka

Nominator's rationale: Isolated category. Not useful for navigation. The lone article is already in Category:2023 in Sri Lankan cricket so a second target is not needed. –Aidan721 (talk) 18:17, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Iranian orthopedic surgeons

Nominator's rationale: 1 entry. Also merge with Category:Orthopaedic surgeons. LibStar (talk) 08:36, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:NJCAA athletics

Nominator's rationale: "Athletics" is redundant and meaningless here. This category actually contains schools that are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA); new name parallels the categories found at Category:Universities and colleges in the United States by athletic conference.
