Canal 3 Niger is a Nigerien private television channel owned by Radio Télévision Canal 3. The channel is a partner of Télé Diffusion du Niger, which enables the channel to be distributed over digital terrestrial television.[1]
History
Canal 3 Niger received a license to operate on 11 July 2008, with a license to operate on UHF channel 35 (583.25MHz) in Niamey.[2] The channel was also made available over the Intelsat 901 satellite, enabling the channel to have national coverage. It also joined Association des Promoteurs des Radios et Télévisions Privées du Niger (APRTPN).[3]
In August 2017, the channel opened a training workshop for future journalists.[4] In April 2024, the channel sacked 36 staff following a salary strike due to "insubordination" and "breach of contract".[5]
At the beginning of each year, Canal 3 Niger airs Baromètre des membres du gouvernement, since at least the mid-2010s, which assesses the performance of government members in an informal manner. The 2024 edition, broadcast on 16 January 2025, bought problems to the communications minister the following day, which led to the suspension of its journalist Seyni Amadou, taken into custody on 18 January, as well as a one-month suspension of the channel.[6] Amadou was released on 20 January.[7][8]
