"The Nuge"
I have removed the reference to his nickname and him being commonly referred to as "the nuge" from the lead to this article. As is common on Wikipedia, if the individual is known more by their nickname than their real name (ie Eminem instead of Marshal Mathers) then it can be mentioned in the lead of the article. If it is to be changed back it should be discussed here first. Karl 334 ☞TALK to ME ☜ 21:40, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Introduction
Hi there, I figured since the review for Jordan Eberle went so well I might as well pick this one up too. Like last time, any suggestions I make that are not related to the GA criteria will be marked (Optional). I will be filling out each section here over the next hour or so. MediaKyle (talk) 20:37, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
Verifiability
- Nicknamed "Nuge" and "RNH" by Oilers fans appears only in the lead, and last time I checked I didn't see it reflected in the sources. If there's a good reason for including this, it should be explained somewhere in the body. Otherwise, it should be removed from the lead. MediaKyle (talk) 20:46, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- After reviewing a bunch of sources, I see now that he is referred to as Nuge quite often, don't see RNH as much but it also comes up. Has anyone actually specifically reported on the nicknames? They could be described in a separate section. I think it does need to be worked into the body somehow per MOS:LEAD. -- MediaKyle (talk) 23:32, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- I think "Nuge" may fall under
a common hypocorism
per MOS:NICKNAME. It saysConsider as a "common" hypocorism one that shortens in a conventionalized way, sometimes also with a diminutive suffix added, and which is derived from a name frequently used in English-speaking countries
. Please let me know if you disagree. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:15, 18 May 2025 (UTC)- I'm not disagreeing that it's an applicable nickname, it seems obvious that it's used quite often, what I was moreso getting at is that seems like something that might be on the cusp of "reasonable to challenge" and thus should be mentioned and sourced somehow in the body as well, but then again if you just read a few of the news articles or Google "The Nuge" you'll see it used plenty of times... Even by his teammates [1]. Not sure what exactly the "right" answer is here. If you feel like you could work a sentence into the body somehow that just explains that he has a nickname that would probably be good, like at Magic Johnson#High school career, but I'm not going to be a stickler about it. - 15: Due to Hockey Canada's affiliate rules for 15-year-olds, Nugent-Hopkins could only play five games with the Rebels during the season. This seems to be misuse of primary sources, as it's provided an interpretation. Is there a secondary source that discusses this? MediaKyle (talk) 21:48, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

- 68: Although there was concern about a potential shoulder injury, Nugent-Hopkins was cleared to play for the Canadian national junior team in the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. This doesn't seem to quite match up with the source, as the CBC article only mentions his shoulder in that he left to got it examined and mentioned conditioning his shoulder, but to me that doesn't equate to "there was concern about a potential shoulder injury". It also wasn't potential, as he was already previously injured. I would find a way to reword this to be more accurate to the source. MediaKyle (talk) 22:08, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

The next game Nuge himself sat out with the bug; while he too only missed one game he seemed quite out of sorts when he returned, both by eye and by stat.

- Leading up to the Oilers training camp, Nugent-Hopkins was encouraged to add weight to his frame and he entered camp at 177 pounds, 12 pounds heavier. "add weight to his frame" seems a bit awkward to me, and the attached source actually doesn't say that, there's just a quote from him where he mentions his weight. In fact, he says "I'm not too focused on my weight right now." Seems like something that should be looked at. MediaKyle (talk) 20:57, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

- At the end of December, head coach Dave Tippett chose to split up McDavid and Draisaitl to make the Oilers harder to play against. Why would this make the Oilers harder to play against? And how does that relate to Nugent-Hopkins being placed on a line with Draisaitl and right winger Kailer Yamamoto? I find this part confusing, could just be my own misunderstanding. MediaKyle (talk) 21:25, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- MediaKyle From my understanding, it seems like Tippett thought the Oilers were too top-heavy (they had similar stats) and wanted to move Draisaitl so he could support the second line/spread the wealth. I am just struggling a bit to word it less colloquially. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 00:30, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- I don't see use of terms that your average hockey fan would understand as an issue, I think it's just that in general more complicated terms should be wikilinked or explained in a note like you already do. To say the Oilers were too top-heavy and he moved Draisaitl to support the second line vaguely makes sense to me, so would probably make sense to a hockey fan... Maybe you could expand on this in an explanatory footnote if you didn't want to make that part too wordy? MediaKyle (talk) 00:36, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:20, 22 May 2025 (UTC)- That sounds good to me. I will note that the article you wikilinked for depth seems to be talking about baseball, and just says "The line system in hockey also follows a depth chart", so that might be a little confusing to some... But I googled "depth of scoring" and I'm seeing the term used in hockey publications so I think that will be satisfactory as far as understandability goes. MediaKyle (talk) 01:33, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- I can def try and expand the definition on the depth chart article too. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:59, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

NPOV
- Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli pinpointed Nugent-Hopkins' lack of confidence as one of the key reasons for his offensive dip. It should be made clear that this is Chiarelli's opinion so that we're not saying he lacks confidence in Wikipedia's voice MediaKyle (talk) 21:08, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

Breadth and scope
- Nugent-Hopkins was not the only Oilers member struggling. After falling out of a playoff spot, coach Dave Tippett was replaced midseason by Jay Woodcroft. This feels off-topic for an article about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Let me know if you disagree, but I think those two sentences could be removed without sacrificing anything. Summary
Overall, the article is well written, neutral, understandable to an appropriately broad audience (I appreciate the use of the note), and seems to cover his entire playing career. I didn't even bother checking if it was stable until just now, but it certainly is. Once all the issues raised have been suitably addressed, should be all good to pass. Thanks for your quick responses. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 23:54, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

- @HickoryOughtShirt?4 Great! I'm here now, and I gave the new parts a read. Everything looks good, although now my question would be: is nothing that happened in the past seven years important enough to be included in the lead? The lead still only describes events in his career up until 2018. I'll get back to you if I have any more notes. MediaKyle (talk) 21:36, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- Oops, I keep forgetting to expand the lead! I think I have just one more thing to fix in the "prose" section than I am good. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Final notes
I see nothing else with the article that would hold it back from passing GA, other than the question of whether or not the lead is to be expanded. Here's a few final ideas and suggestions though, that don't have anything to do with GA:
- Something else I discovered recently that isn't quite as applicable here, but still might be neat: where monetary values are present, you can add Template:Inflation as a finishing touch.
- I thought you might like to know that you're actually using the publisher field of the citation templates incorrectly. I was doing the same thing, until I realized the difference. the work field is meant for the name of the publication, i.e. work=CBC News, whereas publisher is who published that work, so in that case publisher=Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. This has nothing to do with a GA review, but it's something I pick up on ever since I read the documentation for Template:Cite news. If you look at some of my recent articles you'll see what I mean.
- You may already know this, but I just realized that Glossary of ice hockey terms exists, and you could use it to transclude/link to definitions for hockey terms.
- The use of regular dashes vs en dashes is inconsistent in this article, but that doesn't matter for GA. Relevant guidance is located at MOS:ENTO.
As I said, none of the above points hold the article back from GA, just some extra thoughts. I'm happy to pass this once we get the lead figured out. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 22:09, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- MediaKyle Thanks for the notes about the publisher field of the citation template! I have saved a screenshot to assist me in the future. I believe everything is g2g! HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:00, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- @HickoryOughtShirt?4: I think you've just about covered everything now, right? I love the addition of the nicknames under "Personal life", we even got an extra one. I wasn't going to hold up the GA for that but I'm glad you managed to find a good source for it. I haven't noticed any issues with your changes, just made a couple little copyedits. Were you planning on making any more changes before I go ahead and pass it? MediaKyle (talk) 02:01, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- Oh jeez, that was a first. We posted at basically the same time. I'm going to pass this as GA now, then. You should be proud of this one - I can see how much work went into it. You really earned the "green plus" in this endeavour. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 02:03, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- MediaKyle unless RNH does something incredible tonight, it will remain the same. Thanks so much for your review. I really appreciate all the work you've put in for this! HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:04, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

"Hat-trick" vs. "hat trick"
Something that was not caught in the GA review closed just over an hour ago was that this article uses both when it should only use one. Can we pick one and fix the others? I don't have a preference, I just know that both should not be used. mftp dan oops 03:11, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- This wouldn't really be under the scope of a GA review anyways, but you're right. As I mentioned, the dash formatting is also inconsistent between seasons and scoring. I'd probably just add dashes to all the ones without, whereas the article Hat-trick uses the dash. MediaKyle (talk) 03:39, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Unanimous
I don't understand the application of the word unanimous to the first round pick. Only one team got to pick him. Toyokuni3 (talk) 17:00, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- The "unanimous" perspective comes from professional hockey analysts and scouts, such as Bob McKenzie and Craig Button at TSN, the Hockey News, Sportsnet, and the like. mftp dan oops 22:04, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
