2022 or 2024 film?

Normally the release year of a film would be easily determined, but this is a special case. Hundreds of Beavers had an unique release system. A lot of outlets have treated it as a 2024 film. Letterboxd included it as a 2024 film and a bunch of award shows that limit nominees to films released in 2024 allowed it to compete. The filmmakers have also said that it is a 2024 film. Should it be changed or kept? Jon698 (talk) 00:44, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Since it was first released in 2022, that release should be kept in the title. Paleface Jack (talk) 17:18, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. It does not preclude us from mentioning that it got a wider release in 2024. Sometimes award contenders get a limited release at the very end of one year and get a wider release the next, but it would be the previous year that would count. Mike Cheslik image removed?

Cheslik discusses the film in 2024

@Jon698: I see this edit with the comment not really important to have this image here removed this image of Mike Cheslik from the article. Why? I'd think that Cheslik is important to this article, the short description is "2022 film by Mike Cheslik", the first sentence of the article names him twice, etc. I'm not concerned about the specific location, but I do think the article is better with the image. --GRuban (talk) 13:48, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the image by putting it in a multiple image template alongside the Tews image. Jon698 (talk) 14:41, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That works, thank you! --GRuban (talk) 15:00, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for uploading the image in the first place. It initially felt unwieldy to have so many images in the article, but I did put it into the infobox I have for their draft article I have. Jon698 (talk) 15:13, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit notes

I performed copyedit per the request at WP:GOCER. Some notes:

  • Is The Furrier ever identified in the film as the merchant's daughter? I didn't spot it if she was. It might not be a bad idea to have a footnote for that, with any sources which do conclude that she is his daughter.
  • The second paragraph of production states that it was filmed over 12 weeks and specifies 9 weeks of that. Were the other 3 weeks the 3–4 weeks in which the first act was filmed?
  • The lead sentence says that the film was written by Cheslik and Tews, but the Production section says that it was written by Cheslik alone.
  • I added more to the plot about the protagonist's alcohol use, since this is part of his hero's journey.
  • I didn't check the sources, but I feel that for FAC the article could probably have a Themes section, examining Jean's hero's journey, overcoming his alcoholism, the myth of growth through hardship, and the juxtaposition of the industrious civilization of the beavers with Jean's meagre survival. Maybe the sources aren't there, though (it's rare for comedies to be taken seriously).

Ping me if you have any questions, and thanks for your work on this article about a very funny film! – Reidgreg (talk) 17:03, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for the edits that you have made. The credits in the film list both Cheslik and Tews as writers, but it seems that Cheslik was the main contributor to the plot. Tews' writing credit is probably just a result of them being collaborators or him bringing his take on the character. I will add a source for her being the merchant's daughter. About half an hour into the film, in the opening credits The Merchant is introduced as "and her [The Furrier] pa." 2605:AD80:20:C75:B467:58C3:4689:8593 (talk) 07:18, 17 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my bad! I didn't read your note before adding my own subject! To your first point, yes! The Furrier is directly confirmed to be the merchant's daughter around the 1hr 14minute mark, in the on-screen captioned lead-up to the title reveal. To quote the on-screen text, "Read my lips you drunk! If you want to marry my daughter... YOU CAN'T! UNLESS... YOU BRING ME... HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS."
I hope this helps! ~2026-13394-93 (talk) 00:23, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

"Some sources?" say the Furrier is the Merchant's daughter?

The note about the Merchant's daughter phrases it like it's unconfirmed information due to being a silent film. But the Merchant himself says, in the scene that introduces the title of the project, at approx 1hr 14minutes, the Merchant says, on-screen, "Read my lips you drunk! If you want to marry my daughter... YOU CAN'T! UNLESS... YOU BRING ME... HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS."

I appreciate the scholarly integrity given that it's a silent film with a lot of unspoken implications, but this one is actually confirmed in the source material. ~2026-13394-93 (talk) 00:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
