Question from ElectionHackReturns (18:01, 19 November 2024)

Hey Win8x, I was actually a Wiki person before but have long since forgotten the password to my old account. It wasn't connected to my email. I assume there is no way I can get the access back at this stage but just wanted to ask about it anyway just in case? --ElectionHackReturns (talk) 18:01, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey ElectionHackReturns, you are right, you cannot get the account back since the lost password feature depends on having an email. It's unfortunate, but you can start clean with your current account, and don't forget to link an email! win8x (talk) 20:14, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Citrifuge (01:10, 21 November 2024)

Hello! I'm still relatively new to Wikipedia and I noticed you were assigned as my mentor (with your description saying you mostly do anti-vandalism work), so I was wondering: When removing edits from other editors - such as an intentionally incorrect statement that wasn't there beforehand - is it best to track down the original edit in the article history and press the "undo" button (if it's even usable by non-administrators), or just reword the sections in question out? --🍊 citrifuge (talk) 01:10, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Citrifuge. Undos don't typically work on old edits, and therefore it would be easier to just remove/fix the statements. If disruption is from the last edit, then an undo is better, since it prevents you from unintentionally leaving out vandalism. With a desire to always improve the encyclopedia, if the statement has some truth to it and you can easily fix it, it is preferable to an undo. In all cases, you should leave an edit summary.
Yes, undos are available to non-administrators, and they are an essential part of Wikipedia editing. You can learn more at Help:Reverting. I hope this helps, and feel free to ask more questions. Have a good day! win8x (talk) 01:20, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

question from juliansmith1234 regarding reversion of edit

i don't believe that my edit on greenwald was not neutral since greenwald has openly criticized the democratic party for comparing Trump to Hitler ,I have also sourced a direct primary source from greenwald's youtube channel where he states this. Can you please explain what was wrong with my edit ,as well as how do i make it more neutral? Juliansmith1234 (talk) 04:51, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Juliansmith1234, this was a tough revert. I don't like that your edit was just quoting a video for a seemingly random statement, since we could do that for everything he ever says. Wikipedia wants to know what the reliable sources interpreted in his message, not what you heard (WP:Original research). If you could find a reliable source online to cite it, not a YouTube video, it would work. Apologies, I know your edit was in good faith. win8x (talk) 05:00, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for helping to edit the felix Mendez page!

I was called on to edit the Felix Mendez page, while on it,I have noticed that on the page, the description was totally OFF TOPIC, I decided to edit it but didn’t put much detail, after I was gonna publish my note on the page, I saw YOU put a full on description! How do I create my Wikipedia Page?

Thanks, --Kaushikkumar.patel (talk) 16:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Kaushikkumar.patel, if you are trying to create an autobiography, I would strongly recommend you avoid doing that. Wikipedia is not a place for autobiographies and your page will be deleted. I want to create a wikipedia page. How do I start. --Tshinanne wa Matidza (talk) 20:20, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, @Tshinanne wa Matidza. Most help you may need is on Help:Your first article. However, it is not something I would recommend you doing; creating a Wikipedia article is one of the most difficult tasks on Wikipedia. You cannot even create an article right now, but you may create a draft here. Make sure the article doesn't already exist, though!
Avoid writing about yourself, your company, or anything you are affiliated with and may have a conflict of interest with. These drafts will usually be promotional and get deleted quickly. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Have a great day! win8x (talk) 20:52, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Moveleft (13:02, 6 January 2025)

Hi, I'm new here, I am Moveleft and I'd like to create an article about astronomy, a quasar in details. Could you please help me to arrange this work? Thank you for helping me. --Moveleft (talk) 13:02, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, @Moveleft. I have little experience with qasars , but I believe the best way for you to try to make this article is to look into WP:Articles for creation. There, you can freely edit a draft without fear that it may get deleted (unless you abandon it for 6 months).
To begin, you'll have to visit the article wizard. The wizard warns you that anything non-notable won't be accepted as an article; the relevant guideline is Wikipedia:Notability (astronomical objects). If it's notable, you should be able to make a draft and eventually have it accepted as an article.
Creating an article is one of the hardest tasks on Wikipedia, but you can manage it by making a draft and seeing how other, similar articles are organized. If you don't understand a part of my response or have any more questions, feel free to ask. Have a good day, win8x (talk) 20:49, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Win8x I have already made an article wizard but I had a few problemswith the tables, and I didn't really understood how to make visible my article wizard to you. Do you know how I can do that? Moveleft (talk) 16:17, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Moveleft, I checked your contributions and couldn't find a draft that you have created. I could perhaps create it for you, but again, remember that creating a new article is hard. You may find Help:Your first article helpful. win8x (talk) 17:20, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Win8x Ok, I may need some help now. I read some articles of how to write an article, but I think I did something wrong when I tried to create a draft. I need some explenations, because I've already tried to create a draft, but seems like nothing happened. Moveleft (talk) 17:40, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from WHBower (00:08, 2 February 2025)

Hello, Win8x.

I'm Will Bower (WHBower / Wm H Bower), your mentee. I hope this finds you well.

I'm referenced here on Wikipedia, on the following page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_United_Means_Action

...so I created and submitted a brief bio of myself to supplement.

I know this is generally discouraged, but I've kept the information neutral, as I hope the editors will agree — and I've provided COI, links, bona fides, etc., to show all is legit.

Anyhow, I wanted to introduce myself to you, my newest mentor.

Thanks, and have a great weekend,

Will --Wm H Bower (talk) 00:08, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my god, @WHBower, I realize I never answered your question. Deep apologies! It seems your draft was reviewed by a third-party and was declined because you are not notable. Be sure to read this page to fully understand what this means. You will need to find more impartial, third-party sources talking about you in a non-trivial way.
Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia. Have a good day, win8x (talk) 13:34, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New editor experience

At the latest round of AELECT discussions, you said that as a new editor, you found discussions intimidating. I’ve been quite vocal about new editors not getting the information they need at Commons, where I am mainly active now. I know that Wikipedia has done some work on welcoming new editors (WP:TEAHOUSE, WP:AFC); I’m not active enough to know how well it’s working but I’ve heard bad things about it. I wonder what your experience has been like more generally. Brianjd (talk) 02:47, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Brianjd. I think the English Wikipedia is doing a decent job with welcoming brand-new editors, which the Teahouse and AfC are intended for. You can see I'm even supporting this on my own talk page, with the mentorship program.
What I meant in the discussion was more like editors like me, who have roughly 1000-5000 edits and have been here for less than a year (I didn't know how this website worked before June of last year), but are extended-confirmed and know that they have a talk page. It can be scary to be in a discussion with editors with 100,000+ edits, have been here for 16 years and used to be part of ArbCom back in 2014. I've personally had a pretty good experience, honestly, no one has ever complained about me, but then again it's because I really try to be prudent. Not getting into contenuous topics or talking bad at ANI, you get it.
I think I would manage participating in all those dangerous areas, including RfA, but imagine me saying something stupid in opposition to a candidate. I would get shredded into pieces. That's why I like AELECT, which takes away this factor.
I hope this reply wasn't too much or doesn't feel all over the place Feel free to ask clarification or for more. Thank you, win8x (talk) 03:25, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I now just realize two things that I want to do but that I can't really do: I want to apply as AfC reviewer, but find applying for permissions scary, and I want to participate in WP:CCI, but wow it is complicated. I don't want to make mistakes, and I understand why they're so short-staffed over there, unfortunately. win8x (talk) 03:28, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think that makes sense. It sounds like certain discussions on this project are perceived as more toxic than similar discussions on Commons. Of course, discussions there can also be toxic, but users call out bad behavior and act on it if necessary; the system seems to work well overall.
I don’t know why this project would have such a problem with toxic discussions; I assume it is because this project is so big. Brianjd (talk) 04:46, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the sheer size of the English Wikipedia and the amount of contributors it has probably contributes to it. I want to clarify that some venues not necessarily toxic however, just off putting, scary for newcomers (newer than me). win8x (talk) 05:07, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Win8x, do you use Discord? The CCI folks are active there in #wp-cci and would be delighted to help on-board you. It's true that copyright admins are a deeply grumbly sort, but there's a strong camaraderie among the folks masochistic enough to get involved there, and I promise no one will bite you. -- asilvering (talk) 17:56, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Asilvering, yesterday, before applying, I was looking at the WP:WPAFC page and noticed this discord link, and clicked it. The link is broken 😉 and so is yours. However, I appreciate the invite! win8x (talk) 00:35, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. That's strange - it works for me. Did the invite I sent from inside Discord itself just now work for you? -- asilvering (talk) 00:40, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it did. I've taken the liberty of creating a new invite that doesn't expire and I've put it on the WP:WPAFC page. win8x (talk) 00:46, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't even know if it worked. Why are Discord invites such a pain? Either way, thanks, asilvering. win8x (talk) 00:49, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A an active participant in CCI, yes, join us! Let me know if you'd like an easy case to begin with; repairing unattributed translations from foreign Wikipedia articles is where I got my start. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 20:35, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GreenLipstickLesbian, wow thanks! Few times, I looked at the list of cases and was indeed wondering: where to get started? If veterans can't solve this 5 year old case, will I be of any help? I would love to know if you have a suggestion for an easier case to begin with. win8x (talk) 20:39, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps, some cases are old because they're really hard, but most of them linger so long because we just don't have enough editor interested in solving them! So, while I'd probably avoid the 2011 CCI's for now, a lot of the older ones are a lot easier than they may seem.
First things first, this is a useful guide written by Moneytrees, one of the copyright admins:User:Moneytrees/CCI guide. It's well worth a read.
But here's the list I promised you!
I'd say any of those three should be pretty easy. For some that are still easy, but require a bit more thinking, I'd reccomend:
  • Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Werldwayd. Okay, I know this one looks long, but if you go to the last few pages, you'll notice that there's a lot of really small edits to disambiguation pages, because Werldwayd mostly just copied the first paragraph of an article and then posted it into the dab. These are violations, but they're really easy to fix: either follow the steps at W:RIA, or just remove the text and mark the entry with a presumptive deletion mark. If somebody already cleaned up the dab page, just mark the entry with a question mark and that's it. Copyright clerk @The4lines and I are working on this in our spare time, and we'd love any help we can get!
  • Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/20230831 02 (I selected pg 2 for a reason) This one is hard because it's a technical CCI into an active admin; I'd recommend avoiding any major content edits until you have some experience. HOWEVER, the contributor also did a lot of work with short descriptions when they were first announced. They mostly just copy-pasted the first paragraph of the article in, which will show up on the CCI page, but it's not a violation. You can just mark these with an "X".
And then, for some more traditional CCIs that shouldn't be too hard (I'm working on these myself, so I'd love the assistance and I will make myself available to provide second opinions.)
You can also look at User:Moneytrees/CCI Sort for a lot of CCI's sorted by type of violation, or look at Template:CCIlist for all open CCI's sorted by subject matter. Additionally, there are a few tools that make going through individual CCI's a lot easier:
Hopefully you've gotten this far and I haven't scared you off! :P No pressure to immediately drop whatever you're doing and start on these right away or anything, I'm just happy to find somebody taking an interest in this area! I'm, as far as I know, the newest of the CCI regulars and I started late 2023 when I was still a pretty inexperienced editor and, like you, pretty worried about messing things up! The other editors and admins were really helpful, however, and I quickly found that it wasn't as scary as it seemed. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 21:30, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow @GreenLipstickLesbian, this is really appreaciated. I sure will check the Veillg1 one; French is my native tongue. I hope you didn't write all of that just for me. I'll also install Deputy, I didn't know it was a thing. I've also read the CCI guide before, but I'll get a refresher. Thank you so much! 😄 win8x (talk) 00:33, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've got to go, but I tried a little bit with pages 982-987, where I posted the notices on the talk page (like Moneytrees had done). Is that alright? win8x (talk) 01:33, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Chichi2025 (22:39, 28 February 2025)

Hi please help me with an example of what I should write in my homepage to describe myself I think I have over shared my experience. --Chichi2025 (talk) 22:39, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Chichi2025. Wikipedia is not a social network, and you do not have a "homepage". The page that was deleted is your user page, where you describe the activities you do for Wikipedia. Your page was deleted three times for being promotional, so remember to keep it about Wikipedia. win8x (talk) 23:54, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution from French WP

Your edits such as this one are unnecessary. The content you are referring to was added by the same author! Anyone can edit the same article in multiple languages, adding the same info, and that obviously doesn't need attribution to other language wikis (because their name is already in the history log).

This edit is even stranger, where you claim that "Content in the edit of 14:19, 28 January 2013 was translated from the existing French Wikipedia". But that edit only added 2 links! Which were not even present in the French article at that time! Please do better research and don't make assumptions -- P 1 9 9   14:16, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I always check. I never assume they made a copyvio, I always do a proper check to see if they added the infringing content. I did pick their first edit to attribute to, yes, which was not the issue, but they did copy/paste in the article later. I apologize for using the wrong timestamp, I am using a program to make these edit summaries, I'll fix it so it ignores those small little edits. Thanks for informing me, but know that I always check. I've answered the first point on the CCI page. win8x (talk) 14:41, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
