Towards the end of the story, the hero,Joseph, takes refuge with an old vocal Nazi supporter, and has to endure incessant anti-Semitic ranting which he cannot afford to answer without betraying himself. Come the liberation, his tormentor is about to be executed as a collaborator by the Free-French fighters when Joseph intervenes saying that he had to express such views because he was harbouring a Jew... He takes revenge on the old man by saving his life!
