The following is a list of events affecting American television in 2017. Events listed include television show debuts, finales, and cancellations; channel launches, closures, and re-brandings; stations changing or adding their network affiliations; and information about controversies and carriage disputes.

Future events

January

Date Event
6 After nearly 23 years, TEGNA's Seattle-based Northwest Cable News announced that the channel will shut down on this date. The closure arrives after the retirements or contract buyouts of several high-profile on- and off-screen talent the previous April, and also comes at a time when the channel's viewership has decreased in the face of increased news consumption on digital and other non-TV platforms. Approximately 20 employees will be affected, with Tegna seeking to offer them positions at other Tegna stations.[1]
8 The 74th Golden Globes will air on NBC.
18 The 43rd People's Choice Awards will air on CBS.

February

Date Event
5 Super Bowl LI will air on Fox.[2]
12 The 59th Grammy Awards will air on CBS.
26 The 89th Academy Awards will air on ABC.

March

April

Date Event
9 The 2017 MTV Movie Awards will air on MTV.

May

Event
Star Trek returns to television on CBS All Access with a new Star Trek series, subtitled Discovery. This ends the absence of Star Trek on broadcast television since Enterprise was cancelled in 2005.[3]

June

Date Event
30 After a 40 year career as reporter and anchor, including a 25 year tenure as anchorwoman for KUSA-TV/Denver, Adele Arakawa will retire from the Tegna-owned NBC affiliate on this date.[4][5]
