Summary

Description
English: This map shows settlements, sourced from Wikipedia's lists of places in the English counties, that end in the suffixes "-ham," meaning "homestead," or "-ingham," meaning "homestead of the people." These names are broadly accepted to have been the first kind of habitation names coined by the Germanic-speaking migrants and may give an indication as to their early settlement patterns (for example, East Anglia and the river valleys of the Thames and the Trent are particularly rich in these names). Those in Cumberland and Westmorland in particular are subject to the caveat that they may be Anglicizations of Old Norse "holm" forms.
