Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy is an Indian medical professional, liver intensivist, and anesthetist, serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Consultant at Rela Institute and Medical Centre. With over 20 years of experience, he is known for his contributions to liver transplantation, critical care, and healthcare management.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Coimbatore Medical College. He specialized in Anesthesia and Intensive Care, earning a postgraduate degree from Madras Medical College & Hospital, Chennai.

He later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), United Kingdom. To expand his expertise in healthcare management, he pursued an Executive MBA (PGPMAX) from the Indian School of Business (ISB), including international immersion programs at The Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the National University of Singapore.

Career

Dr. Kaliamoorthy has played a pivotal role in liver transplantation and healthcare management. During the 2015 Chennai floods, he led a team that rescued 110 patients from a hospital affected by severe flooding. In 2018, he joined Rela Hospital in Chennai, where he oversaw the commissioning of the hospital and the establishment of the world’s largest liver intensive care unit.

With extensive experience in liver transplantation, he has managed over 2,000 transplant recipients, including 500 pediatric transplants, 1,600 living donor liver transplants (LDLT), and 400 deceased donor liver transplants (DDLT). He has also contributed to the setup of multiple liver transplant units across India and internationally. In 2019, he was part of the medical team that performed India’s youngest liver transplant on a 42-day-old infant.[1]

Research and Publications

Dr. Kaliamoorthy has published over 60 research articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and contributed to several book chapters. His research focuses on Anesthesia, intensive care, and liver transplantation. Some of his notable publications include:

Dr. Kaliamoorthy has spoken about the role of AI in healthcare, emphasizing its potential to assist in clinical decision-making, exam preparation, and administrative tasks. He acknowledges that AI tools, such as ChatGPT , can provide general medical knowledge but should not replace clinical expertise.[3]
