Stephanie Ringel (2 July 1970-) is a German-Swiss journalist, entrepreneur, and author. She has been a reporter for the wide-circulation Swiss tabloid SonntagsBlick magazine.[1] Likewise, she has been the first female cross-departmental author at the leading Swiss periodical Schweizer Illustrierte.[2] Presently, Ringel is the editor-in-chief of the Swiss edition of the design magazine Schöner Wohnen. Similarly, Ringel is an important advocate for ovarian cancer awareness in Switzerland, such as via her active participation in the local activities of the Swiss Cancer League, e.g. in Zurich, Switzerland and the self-help groups for ovarian cancer patients.[3]
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Advocacy
Since 2016, Ringel has been an advocate for raising ovarian cancer awareness at the Manja Gideon Foundation. In light of this activity, Ringel also has written a biographical work entitled the illustrated biography "traces" Manja Gideon,[4] the narrative of which focuses on the cancer experience of Manja Gideon, the founder of the eponymous non-profit foundation dedicated to spreading the public awareness about ovarian cancer.[5]
In this publication, Stephanie Ringel presents the biography and the philanthropic pursuits of Gideon, the late founder of the Manja Gideon Foundation. In this work, the author conveys the narrative of Manja Gideon’s fight against cancer and her intention to build a charitable organization tasked with educating the general public about the symptoms of ovarian cancer and assistance resources its victims can access. [6]
The Manja Gideon Foundation also seeks to support efforts and projects oriented towards research, preventive measures and treatment of ovarian cancer. [7]
Likewise, Ringel has been closely involved in the activities of local cancer-related charities and organisations, such as Krebsliga Zurich, via public readings, information events, and expert discussions on cancer topics, in order to promote the exchange of patient and scholarly information between the professional community and the general public, e.g., in relation to ovarian cancer.[8]
Ringel also regularly takes part in information and public events dedicated to the ovarian cancer awareness in Switzerland, such as during the Infoveranstaltung Eierstockkrebs event in 2024. This public discussion took place in Zurich under the eagis of Krebsliga Zürich, while involving the participation of other local activists and organizations, e.g., BRCA-Gruppe Zürich,[9] a female self-help group for ovarian cancer patients, that promote the awareness of ovarian cancer, risk factors, and coping strategies. [10] [11]
Positioning in the Field of Swiss Publishing
Between 1999 and 2002 Ringel worked as a freelance journalist for the daily newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund and as a correspondent reporting from Trier for the Luxemburger Wort. She also made contributions for the weekend edition Bild am Sonntag of the national newspaper Bild.[12]
In 2003 she moved to Switzerland to work for the Swiss media company Ringier AG in Zurich. Ringel has worked as a reporter for Sonntagsblick magazine in the society and culture section, where she had her own interview format “Sonntags bei...”.[13] The section has consisted of interviews and background reports on relevant public figures such as: Herzog & de Meuron, Christo & Jeanne Claude, Peter Zumthor, Alfredo Häberli, Donna Leon. Likewise, Ringel has been contributing periodical articles covering current developments in the art market and scholarly literature, such as via book reviews. For instance, in 2002 Ringel has reviewed the collected volume titled “Die Moderne und ihre Sammler: Französische Kunst in deutschem Privatbesitz vom Kaiserreich zur Weimarer Republik,” on the modern art and its German collectors during the German Empire and Weimar Republic periods, edited by Andrea Pophanken and Felix Billeter, and published by the Akademie Verlag in 2001.[14]
In 2010, Ringel has transferred to Ringier’s magazine Schweizer Illustrierte[15] At this magazine, she has been contributing writing about topics related to society, education, and religion. As part of this appointment, Ringel has been conducting interviews with prominent contemporary figures. For the 100th anniversary[16] of the magazine, Ringel has led the production of a 10-part series on how the magazine has documented the contemporary history and media development through its reporting.
Between 2011-2013 Ringel was simultaneously an author at Ringier’s corporate magazine DOMO and editor-in-chief ad interim from 2012 onward.[17] The magazine has won the European Excellence Award in 2011.[18]
In 2013 Ringel left Ringier AG[19], in order to found the communication and editorial content agency Stephanie Ringel Media. [20] At the time of this writing, she holds the position of the editor-in-chief of the Swiss edition of the design magazine Schöner Wohnen. Ringel, likewise, makes contributions to various periodical culture-related publications, such as Hochparterre[21] and Tages-Anzeiger.[22] In 2014 Ringel led the relaunch of the Swiss parents' magazine Schweizer ElternMagazin Fritz+Fränzi.[23][24] Ringel’s work primarily revolves around design, women in the design sector, and architecture topics.[25]
Design Expertise
Ringel is an external expert and jury member in the field of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW, which has schools across Aargau, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, and Solothurn cantons in Switzerland.[26]
Similarly, Ringel has been regularly serving in professional juries dedicated to art and design, such as in the capacity of the jury member for the Zurich design fair Blickfang, Designmesse Blikfang in 2024.[27] [28]
