Gajen Nad (born 18 November 1989) is a Malaysian stand-up comedian & emcee / master of ceremony. He is well known for his clean comedy[1]and has performed for many corporate events in Malaysia & Singapore. He has a Netflix comedy special available worldwide, titled Professional Mixed Breed.
Early Life
Gajen Nad was born on 18th November 1989 in Penang,[2]Malaysia. Currently, based in Kuala Lumpur. He is a Malaysian Chinese-Indian mix, Chindian.[3]He studied in Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Batu Lanchang for primary studies and Penang Free School for secondary studies.[4]He scored 9A's for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (equivalent to O Levels). He studied mechanical engineering (hons) in Monash University.[5] During his final year in engineering, he starting performing stand-up comedy part-time. His first show was in February 2012. He graduated in November 2012 but he never worked as an engineer. He worked as an IT consultant in Accenture from 2013 to 2018 in telecommunications and oil and gas projects. His project management work revolved around Oracle Weblogic, SAP plant maintenance, IT support, Salesforce and system enhancements. On the 14th of September 2018, he left Accenture to pursue stand-up comedy full-time.
Career
2012
Gajen Nad officially started his stand-up comedy career on February 2012. However, he found his talent when he won second place in Monash Talent Night 2009. He was only a first year engineering student at that time. Since then, Monash University clubs and associations kept inviting him to perform for their events.[6]At the end of 2011, one of his friends asked him to perform stand-up comedy in public, specifically for a show called, Comedy Kao Kao, organized monthly at The Bee, Publika, Kuala Lumpur. He signed up and performed a 5 minutes set for Comedy Kao Kao on 17th of February 2012. His career kicked off as a stand comedian. On the 15th of September 2012, he organized and headlined Monash University Malaysia's first ever stand-up comedy show titled Monash Comedy Central. In November 2012, he graduated as a mechanical engineer from Monash University. Despite having just a few months of experience in stand-up comedy, he already performed for a few corporate events at the end of 2012.
2013 - 2019
On the 1st of April 2013, he worked as an IT consultant in Accenture. During the day, he would be busy with project management work. At night, he would perform stand-up comedy at open mic shows like One Mic Stand in PJ Live Arts and Crackhouse Comedy Club. During some of the weekends, he would emcee company dinners. In the same year, 2013, he made his debut on TV. NTV7 shot a short documentary of him being a stand-up comedian which was a big achievement considering he only had 1 year of experience in stand-up comedy In 2013 and 2014, he made his international debut by performing in Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2016, he was performed for KOMEDIRI which was Malaysia's first ever english stand-up comedy show aired on TV (Astro Warna). In 2017, he got invited to do a comedy tour in India. It was 17 shows in total, in Mumbai and New Delhi. In 2018, he performed in Melbourne and received testimonial from The Comic's Lounge.
On the 14th of September 2018, after 5 and a half years of doing stand-up comedy part-time, Gajen Nad left his job in Accenture to pursue stand-up comedy and emcee full-time. Both consulting and stand-up comedy are his passions but stand-up comedy is the much bigger one. Being full-time, he knew he needed a website. In Dec 2018, www.gajennad.com went live.
2019 marks his first year of going full-time. He was awarded the 'Most Promising Stand-up Comedian in Malaysia' by Top 10 Malaysia. He also emceed and performed stand-up comedy for a lot of notable company events such as Westin Hotel, IKEA, AIA, Dell and many more.[7]
2020 - 2021
In March 2020, Malaysia implemented MCO (Movement Control Order) due to the covid-19 pandemic. Gajen Nad had 0 income for quite a few months. To make things worse, in December 2019, he booked a theater for August 2020 to perform his first ever stand-up comedy special.[8]Unfortunately, his comedy special had to be postponed to the following year. During the lockdown, he learnt how to perform virtual stand-up / sit-up comedy. Turns out, there's a light at the end of the tunnel as he started getting virtual corporate events requests.[9] By the end of the year, he has performed stand-up comedy virtually for HSBC, GSK, Avery Dennison, Cisco and many more. In 2021, there was another lockdown but it didn't concern him as he was used to virtual events. However, his comedy special had to be postponed again.[10]
2022
On 26th and 27th August, he performed and recorded (video production team was The Spacemen) his first ever stand-up comedy special in PJ PAC, 1 Utama, Selangor. He sold 1000 tickets in total over 2 nights. Show managers were Phoon Chi Ho & Chrisy Wu. Opening acts were Brian Tan, Riezman and Hindra.[11]
2023
He performed stand-up comedy in Auckland, New Zealand, specifically The Classic Comedy Club. On 5th of September 2023, he collaborated with Study Melbourne Hub KL to organize a bi-weekly open mic comedy show called, The Making Of Jokes. On the 1st of December 2023, his comedy special,Professional Mixed Breed, made it on Netflix and it is available worldwide. For a short period of time, his comedy special was trending.[12]
2024 - Now
In 2024, he performed in Berlin, Germany. Overall, Gajen Nad has emceed and performed stand-up comedy for lots of corporate events in Malaysia such as company dinners, awards, appreciation night, team building, product launch, conferences, talks and even wedding reception dinners. Most of his clients a big companies / associations such as PUMA, Under Armour, Mercedes- Benz, BMW, Intel, EY, Blackmores, Grab, Maybank, RHB, AmBank, Shopify, Xero, J.P Morgan, Kimberly-Clark, Malaysian Medical Association, B.Braun and many more. With over 13 years of local and international experience, Gajen Nad is one of the top emcees / master of ceremony and one of the best stand-up comedians in Malaysia (there are not many to begin with). In 2025, he will be performing his new stand-up comedy special. Unlike the first comedy special, this time, he will be performing his comedy special in Malaysia and Asia as well.
