"Cool Cat" is a song by the English rock band Queen that appears as the penultimate track on their 1982 album Hot Space.
Background
The song was written by Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. Early versions of the track had David Bowie sing backing vocals and include spoken word sections during the tracks's middle eight section, but Bowie was dissatisfied with his contributions and had them removed.[3]
Reception
In a review of Hot Space for Rolling Stone, critic John Milward stated the song "takes the band as close to a street corner as it'll ever get."[4] Louder critic Chris Chantler stated that "all he does is mumble a few half-hearted 'bum-bum-bums' under Freddie's camp falsetto." and that "the song's rubbish."[2]
Personnel
According to the liner notes of Hot Space:[5]
- John Deacon – bass, rhythm guitars, synthesizer, drum machine
- Freddie Mercury – lead vocals, backing vocals, electric piano, synthesizer
2024 single release
In 2024, as Queen's contribution to Record Store Day, the band released a single for the song that featured an instrumental of the track as it's b-side.[6]
Legacy
In 2023, the track was used an advertisement for Amazon Prime which showed a young woman who buys a jacket similar to a jacket worn by a bobblehead Freddie Mercury also seen in the video.[7]
