inconsistency between articles
The article on the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer states that the aquifer's water contains unhealthy levels of mercury. The article on the New Jersey Pine Barrens/Pinelands says that the water is among the purest in the United States. Both cannot be right. Jcbowers18 (talk) 19:24, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

Unincorporated communities
A handful of New Jersey articles describe the settlement as an unincorporated area (New Jersey). This link is a redirect to Local government in New Jersey#Unincorporated communities, but that section doesn't exist, and the whole article doesn't mention unincorporated communities at all. To confuse things a little more, the article Unincorporated_area#United_States claims that
All of the land in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island, and nearly all of the land in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, is part of an incorporated area of some type.
. Can anyone clarify this apparent contradiction? Colonies Chris (talk) 16:07, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- Colonies Chris, yes, every square inch of New Jersey is part of a municipality / minor civil division in the form of a borough, city, town, township or village. But what about areas within a municipality? Places like South Brunswick and Woodbridge Township have many communities within them and we've used the term "unincorporated community" for places like Deans or Avenel, which are NOT incorporated. Many of these articles like Local government in New Jersey have been updated over the past few decades, and may well need updating. Unincorporated community (New Jersey) redirects correctly (and see this version of the article before it became a redirect). Perhaps the same redirect should be used for unincorporated area (New Jersey)? Alansohn (talk) 21:03, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- And that redirect was fixed to point to the working section. Alansohn (talk) 21:25, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I have two comments, the first a technical one. Both Deans, New Jersey and Avenel, New Jersey have piped links to Local government in New Jersey#Unincorporated_communities rather than redirects, so fixing the redirect hasn't helped those. There may be more such cases of course. Secondly, more fundamentally, I'm struggling to understand how a neighbourhood that's part of a larger municipality, and governed by that municipality, can be described as 'unincorporated'. By that measure, any identifiable district or neighbourhood of any town or city could be thought of as 'unincorporated', when most people would just see it as a neighbourhood of the larger incorporated entity. Surely 'unincorporated' should only apply to areas which are part of the state but not part of a local government area within the state? Colonies Chris (talk) 10:48, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
