Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Moving from a closed template.

@Gog the Mild: could I get a leave to renominate the article? I don't see the hiatus as necessary, as the FAC was attracting supports; it just didn't attract many participants. NegativeMP1 was about to provide his spotcheck and was positive of the prose. Skyshiftertalk 22:40, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am afraid not. The instructions state "A coordinator may exempt from this restriction an archived nomination that attracted no (or minimal) feedback." So the nom having attracted a lot of attention works against me being able to waive the restriction. I know how rough it can feel to have a nomination timed out, but this one wasn't moving towards a clearly stated consensus to support in the sort of timescale it needed to. Can I suggest pinging all the reviewers and asking them to continue working with you on the article while you wait to renominate. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:10, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Lavender Heart

The Lavender Heart
The Lavender Heart is awarded to Wikipedians who endure anti-LGBTQ+ harassment in the course of their efforts improving the encyclopedia. While we may all do our best to laugh it off and not feed the trolls, it's important to recognize that words can cut deep, and to make sure that no one feels they're alone when they deal with bigotry and harassment. 💜 — Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 22:27, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Reverting edit to Bolsonarism

To start, I gave more than enough reason to remove the label "neo-fascist" and the WP:NPOV sources this fringe opinion has. To give an example, labeling Bolsonarism as neo-fascist is the equivalent of labeling Lulism as Marxist-Leninist (also unfounded in truth and unfounded from truly scholarly sources. I removed this label because it gives undue weight to a fringe opinion held exclusively by left-wing sources, and I am posting this here because your template on my talk page invited me to do so. I am simply trying to improve the page by removing NPOV sources. User:Hamjamguy — Preceding undated comment added 00:52, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for the article, introduced: "In 2007, Clams Casino was a random guy, producing random instrumentals for people to rap over it. He didn't get much attention until he got in touch with Lil B in 2009 and produced his album 6 Kiss. One track that immediately got attention was "I'm God", with its ethereal production sampling Imogen Heap. Unexpectedly, Clams Casino and Lil B would be cited as the pioneers of the cloud rap subgenre, with "I'm God" being cited as "cloud rap's seminal track" and "the birth of cloud rap" in the following years. However, it took over a decade for it to be released officially, due to its sample usage. Over these years where Clams Casino tried to get the sample cleared, the song received a large cult following on the Internet. After eleven years, "I'm God" was officially released in 2020 with Imogen Heap properly credited."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:16, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Congratulations, Skyshifter! The article you nominated, Not in Love (Crystal Castles song), has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, FrB.TG (talk) via FACBot (talk) 12:05, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation backlog drive

Hello Skyshifter:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in June!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 1 month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 June 2025 through 30 June 2025.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3200 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 20 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle
The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle

Hey Skyshifter, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.

In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). Brazilian sources

Hello, Skyshifter! I hope you're doing well this friday. I believe you may have seen this before, but a while ago I created a personal subpage for evaluating Brazilian sources: User:Cathodography/Brazilian sources (the page was actually created after a discussion I read where you mentioned a "fishy" source that was deemed unreliable. It made me realize that there's no official list of reliable Brazilian sources, which is something I think could be really helpful).

I was aiming for that page to be moved to a more permanent place, possibly under a WikiProject like WP:BRAZIL. If you have a chance, could you take a look at the list and let me know if there are any sources you disagree with? The entries are based on my own research and past experience, as well as prior discussions on ptwiki. There are a few marked as "Unclear" that still need sorting. I'd be happy to discuss and adjust things accordingly. Thanks! Cattos💭 06:51, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cattos💭 03:14, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DCWC August update

We're a month into the 2025 Developing Countries WikiContest, with stiff competition at the top of the leaderboard already! Our current top five contestants are:

  1. Spookyaki (submissions) – 256 points, mostly from a handful of GAs about women's history in Latin America as well as the 1991 Haitian coup d'état.
  2. vigilantcosmicpenguin (submissions) – 229 points, back with a number of articles on abortion in various African countries.
  3. simongraham (submissions) – 213 points, mainly from GAs on species of jumping spiders in both Africa and Azerbaijan.
  4. El Salvador PizzaKing13 (submissions) – 200 points, with five GAs on articles relating to Salvadoran politics, history, and griddle cakes.
  5. Bosnia and Herzegovina BeanieFan11 (submissions) – 168 points from a few GAs, a few DYKs, and a few ITNs on athletes from a variety of countries.

Looking for ways to climb up the leaderboard yourself? Help out your fellow participants by answering a few review requests, particularly the older entries. Several more nominations needing attention are listed at eligible reviews, and highlighed entries receive a 1.5× multiplier!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2025, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event with the theme What Women Do! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 different occupations or professions (or broader roles in society) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

DCWC closing update

Two weeks ago, the 2025 Developing Countries WikiContest came to a close! After three months of stiff competition at the top of the leaderboard, we have our winners. Bronze Belt Buckle – 3rd place vigilantcosmicpenguin (submissions), continuing his work on covering abortion in Africa, comes in third with 692 points. Silver Belt Buckle – 2nd place simongraham (submissions) comes in second with 763 points, largely from a slew of good articles about jumping spiders. And returning to the podium for the second year in a row, Gold Belt Buckle – 1st place Bosnia and Herzegovina BeanieFan11 (submissions) takes the Gold Belt Buckle with a mind-boggling 946 points from his series of articles on sportpersons. Congratulations to our winners!

Amazingly, the award for the most countries covered goes to both Bosnia and Herzegovina BeanieFan11 (submissions) and simongraham (submissions), who each submitted articles under 30 flags! Bosnia and Herzegovina BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins for writing the most quality articles (16 good articles). For submitting 16 articles related to El Salvador, El Salvador PizzaKing13 (submissions) wins the award for most submissions under one country. The award for most submissions related to women goes to both Spookyaki (submissions) (7 biographies about women) and vigilantcosmicpenguin (submissions) (21 related articles). And for the second year, simongraham (submissions) wins for the most reviews, having submitted 21!

Among the participants' contributions were 2 FAs, 5 FLs, 124 GAs, and an uncounted number of DYKs, ITNs, and reviews of every kind! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year, and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...

We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). Hello Skyshifter:

Faz sentido remover. Skyshiftertalk 21:41, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.

Potential WP:BADNAC

I believe the closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Life Is Strange: Reunion was a BADNAC. Just from reading through it, it's obvious this was not an open and shut case. At the very least, it would need a rationale for why a pile-on supervote largely comprised of pure WP:VOTEs took precedence over policy-based objections. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 08:04, 27 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Wisp

There is an additional notable Wisp. A disambiguator is needed.

I am aware that Wisp does not have his own article on English Wikipedia, but the existence of fr:Wisp, pl:Wisp (muzyk), ru:Wisp, it:Wisp (musicista), and arz:ويسپ is not insignificant. A Wikidata item for him exists, and he has articles on the French, Polish, Russian, Italian, and Egyptian Arabic Wikipedias.

Referring to the other Wisp as the only Wisp is wrong because she is not the only Wisp, and it is confusing to refer to her as such when this "Wisp (musician)" is a completely different person elsewhere.

Please reconsider. — rae5e <talk> 17:52, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Theki: On Wikipedia, we use disambiguators when they are needed. With only one Wisp musician being notable, there is no reason to add the "shoegaze" disambiguator. The electronic Wisp musician also doesn't seem notable for English Wikipedia's standards, hence why it was redirected to the label article over ten years ago. If an article for the electronic Wisp is created, then an argument could be made here. Skyshiftertalk 17:58, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, a disambiguator is needed. The language sidebar for the article on the other Wisp already trips up because it thinks the article is about Reid Dunn when it isn't. I assume the notability guidelines of other Wikipedias aren't the same as ours, but the fact is still that we are referring to a completely different Wisp then these other wikis are. That is confusing.
Maybe I am a little biased because I find it somewhat problematic for someone to come and subsume the primary alias of a musician who has been professionally producing music for decades before the other person was even born. I will continue to insist that the disambiguator should be added. It doesn't make sense for it to be absent. — rae5e <talk> 18:07, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
How does it trip up? Wisp shoegaze links to Wisp (Q125546993) and Wisp electronic links to Wisp (Q4020519), the correct Wikidata items for each.
English Wikipedia is the English Wikipedia. Other languages having an article about non-notable musicians doesn't mean we should change the title of notable musician articles. Wisp (electronic musician) is merely a redirect to a label article where no prose information exists about Wisp, merely a mention in a list of members. This does not justify changing the title of Wisp (musician) at all.
It doesn't matter for how much time the other Wisp has been producing music for. What matters are the notability guidelines of Wikipedia. It happens that a Wisp, born later than the electronic Wisp, received enough coverage to have an article on the English Wikipedia (including being called "the Next Leader of the Shoegaze Revival" and "Gen Z's ambassador for the opaque and brutal"), while the electronic one has not, despite producing music for much longer. And that's fine! We go by notability, not career length. That's why we only have one Wisp (musician) while the other one is merely a redirect. Maybe it could be turned into an article, but my search didn't yield too many results.
Of course, you are always open to open a move discussion on the talk page. I believe that would be the best course of action if you still believe the article should be moved. Skyshiftertalk 18:20, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the redirect of the electronic musician to The Shimmering Hour, an album of his. The album appears to be notable with at least three reliable reviews. I couldn't find any sources justifying an article about the musician though, and this album appears to be his only notable work. (I'd be happy to be proven wrong though). Women in Green reviewing drive

Hello Skyshifter:

This month, February 2026, WikiProject Women in Green is participating in the February 2026 GAN Backlog Drive, in which we're aiming to review as many outstanding Good Article (GA) nominations about women and women's works as possible. If you want to help out, you can check out the project talk page for a list of nominations in need of review (including some WiG originals). If you haven't reviewed a GA nomination before, be sure to check out the reviewing instructions and guidelines and feel free to ask for a mentor to check your work.

We are also working together with a wikithon hosted on 5 February by Wikimedia UK, which will focus on writing and improving articles about women involved in sustainable development. If you want to join the event, feel free to sign up at the eventbrite page; or if you would be interested in providing a 20-minute assessment and/or a full GA review of the submitted articles in the weeks following, put your name down on the project talk page for updates as the event progresses.

We hope to see you there!
