Description
museum sculpture by an artist of the German Third Reich[1]
Date 1940

Medium postcard image (HDK 414) of museum sculpture
Current location
Haus der Kunst (formerly Haus der Deutschen Kunst), München
Notes This sculpture is remarkably similar to the Pennsylvania Railroad World War II Memorial sculpture, Angel of the Resurrection (1952), by Walker Kirtland Hancock (1901-1998) which stands in Philadelphia's 30th Street Station. The plaster model for that sculpture is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Hancock's lifeless soldier is shirtless, with pants, and is being supported in the same way as Thorak's, only by the Archangel Gabriel instead of a symbolic woman.
