Geparnath Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located near Kota, Rajasthan in India. The Abhisheka of Shiva Lingam is often conducted at the temple, using the temple's natural water stream.[1][2]
History
Constructed in the 16th century, the temple is believed to have been commissioned by the wife of King Bhoj. It is nestled 400 feet deep in the hills, requiring visitors to descend approximately 350 steps to reach the temple.[1]
Architectural features
The temple is located on the banks of the Chambal River. A continuous stream of water flows over the Shiva lingam. Nearby, there is a naturally formed reservoir where devotees bathe.[2]
Cultural significance
The temple is known for its annual Maha Shivaratri pilgrimage fair, which attracts thousands of visitors. Also, this temple is famous for its waterfall, which has a height of 120 meters.[3]
Conservation
Since 1961, the Archaeological Survey of India has protected the temple, preserving its historical and cultural heritage.[1]
Tourism
Locals suggest that improving the temple infrastructure may help promote tourism.[1]
Incidents
In 2008, the temple’s steps collapsed, trapping 135 visitors and resulting in one fatality. National attention was brought to the temple's condition and accessibility.[4]
In 2022, two students drowned in the temple’s reservoir—one from Bihar and the other from Madhya Pradesh.[5]
