Fixing the way Nigerian newspapers are cited

I honestly looked for a better thread title, pardon me, haha. Hello community members, I was thinking of several things regarding how our newspaper web urls are cited.

Firstly, If you use the Visual Editor (or generally, for editors, especially new, who use VE more often that the Source Code Editor), and try pasting the link of a news piece from any Nigerian news website on the automatic citation generator, say The Guardian, you will notice that it will return a {{cite web}} type of citation and not a {{cite news}}, you know, and of course you will see a |website= parameter instead of a |newspaper= one, and in all surety, the automatic citation generator would also not be able to put in the necessary |issn= parameter. Normally, this VE's automatic citation generator is powered by Citoid, and for many newspapers in the US, UK and India, their newspapers websites are cited correctly with the {{cite news}} format and with all the relevant parameters for newspapers prefilled. The reason our newspapers do not work is because of some backend configuration for Citoid that needs to happen. I am planning on working on that, such that when everything is configurated and deployed from Citoid upstream, the automatic citation generator in VE would start working perfectly. Basically, that is all about this... what do you think? I would also appreciate exploring more ideas, please.

Secondly, the above will make future citations to the newspapers work well, but what about newspapers that have been cited before now? That is, for example, for most articles right now, you will find a {{cite web}} for these newspapers' links instead of the {{cite news}}. The above will not fix previously cited newspaper links, so I also will go ahead a use a robot account to do gnome edits across articles, the edits would basically be looking like this one; changing the {{cite web}} to {{cite news}}, replacing |website= with |newspaper= (making sure it is having the correct wikilink to the newspaper's article, if it exists), adding the |issn= and filling it with the relevant ISSNs for the newspapers, and for cases where the citation does not have a |last= and |first=, retrieve that info from the URL (there are cases where you will find the newspaper's name as the author of the news piece, those ones would be omitted). So, for this... what do you also think? I will by all means appreciate more ideas on this one too, please.

Thank you already. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 09:34, 20 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that’s a great idea tbh. I don’t use VE (the source code allows me to get my hands dirty). I think some parameters would still be missing, especially the |issn= and |first= and |last=. My reason for this is, I don’t think newspapers such as This Day and The Sun gives web access to all their writers. So when the newspaper url is in the amp version (which is usually is and most times redirects from the usual url to AMP), you used see the |first= and |last= filled with Raphael (in the case of The Sun; who I suspect is their web editor or something).
I know you must have put this into consideration but it’s a heads-up if it skipped. Overall, I trust it should be an efficient work from your end. Best, Reading Beans, Duke of Rivia 12:32, 20 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Reading Beans Noted, thank you so much! This is a very good observation; it is in fact, one of the many things I am putting into consideration while executing this, thanks for the heads-up, very much appreciated. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:11, 20 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a very thoughtful proposal and it addresses a real problem editors face daily. Fixing both future and existing citations would be a huge win. Thanks for taking this on. 😊 Idoghor Melody (talk) 20:04, 14 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Notice

The article Sheikh Abubakre Sidiq Bello has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tagged as Unreferenced for almost 4 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Spiritual but not notable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Discussion about WikiProject banner templates

For WikiProjects that participate in rating articles, the banners for talk pages usually say something like:

There is a proposal to change the default wording on the banners to say "priority" instead of "importance". This could affect the template for your group. Please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council#Proposal to update wording on WikiProject banners. Idea regarding Template:Nigerian English

I recommend making a quick guide on Template:Nigerian English which shows copyeditors the key differences in formal, standardized written Nigerian English (especially differences with UK and US Englishes). Please be sure to cite instances in dictionaries, government websites, and/or newspapers of record. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:26, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for review: Hakeem Olatunbosun Shitta

Hello WikiProject Nigeria members,

I recently drafted an article on Hakeem Olatunbosun Shitta, a Nigerian photographer, publisher, and cultural documentarist active from the 1970s–1990s. The draft was declined at AfC on notability grounds, but it is supported by multiple independent Nigerian newspaper profiles (including full Guardian features from 1989 and 1991), arts journals, and contemporaneous reporting.

I would appreciate feedback from editors familiar with Nigerian cultural history on whether the sourcing meets WP:GNG and whether the article would be suitable for mainspace, or if further framing improvements are recommended.

Thank you for your time. Kunleoladimeji (talk) 12:48, 14 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You cited offline newspapers, would you mind adding their page numbers?
also, to aid verification, would you be able to take a picture of these pages of the newspapers and upload in temporary image services like imgur and share their link here? Vanderwaalforces (talk) 14:14, 14 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Vanderwaalforces
Apologies for the delay, and thank you again for your helpful suggestions.
I’ve now added page numbers to the offline newspaper citations where available. I’ve also photographed the relevant pages and uploaded them together in a single Imgur album to make verification easier:
https://imgur.com/a/hakeem-shitta-legacy-archive-ZsvELJj
The album includes mastheads, publication dates, page numbers, article titles, and (where applicable) visible photo credits.
I’m currently refining the draft further for structure and neutrality before resubmitting through AFC.
Many thanks again for taking the time to review and guide the improvements — it’s genuinely appreciated. Kunleoladimeji (talk) 23:23, 22 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Kunleoladimeji Thank you for taking your time to do this as it is worth it. After my evaluation, Hakeem Shitta has received substantial coverages from multiple well-bylined pieces from independent and reliable sources, therefore meeting WP:BASIC and clearly meeting WP:GNG. I can see the draft has been declined twice but I won't hold that against the reviewers especially seeing that most sources are offline. I will advise rewriting the Legacy section, removing that weird listing in the tributes part; it should simply be straight prose. Also, kindly move the Final years section above the Legacy section. Try reducing the amount of paragraphs you have in sections, for example, the Legacy section has too many short paragraphs; they should just be logically merged.
After these, I'll be happy to take another look. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 11:37, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for the delay, I was preparing for an impromptu promotion interview.
I’ve now made the suggested revisions i.e. moved “Final years and death” above “Legacy,” rewritten the Legacy section into straight prose, removed the listing format, merged shorter paragraphs, and added page numbers where available.
I’d appreciate your having a further look at it. Thanks again for the guidance. Kunleoladimeji (talk) 13:43, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, just a quick note to say I’ve made the revisions you suggested — moved the “Final years and death” section above “Legacy,” rewrote the Legacy section into prose, and merged the shorter paragraphs.
Whenever you have time, I’d appreciate it if you could take another look. Thanks again for the helpful feedback. Kunleoladimeji (talk) 06:20, 7 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Vanderwaalforces: Just flagging this in case my earlier message got buried. No rush at all — whenever you have time to take another look, I’d appreciate it. Thanks again. Kunleoladimeji (talk) 09:16, 9 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry for the late response, Kunle. I like what I see and I have reviewed this draft now from a topic expert perspective. I have updated the article's talk page appropriately. Please, follow WP:COIDISCLOSE properly, and have a great day. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 17:33, 9 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
