1842
Hi, what's your source for 1842 (wrt Broadbottom Viaduct)? Biddle has it as 1845. Btw, I came across this NHLE entry, which is supposed to be about Broadbottom but the grid reference and description are about Dinting. I though you might find it useful if you wanted to expand the latter a bit. Also, some of the detail in the Broadbottom article might be useful in the Dinting article—the two seem to have quite an intertwined history. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:49, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- My source for 1842 is one I used in the Dinting article, [1], specifically the part that says "Broadbottom station had opened on 10/12/1842 and the contract for the Etherow viaduct immediately east of the station was let in early 1842 with construction commencing on 5th March of that year. The viaduct was opened to traffic on 24th December 1842, a fantastic achievement." (Emphasis added.)
- I'll see about expanding Dinting in a while, but it's the night before the working week. Rcsprinter123 (spout) @ 20:56, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Apparently when individuals search for information about the flu and its symptoms in Wikipedia when they feel ill, this generates data useful in forecasting the the flu season."

"It is, perhaps, ironic that humanity chose the week of Halloween to finally put its fears to bed. Let's face it: 2014 has been a year of tragedies, conflicts, plagues and pain, and eventually something had to break... Whether we at last came to terms with our limited ability to affect events, shoved those events under the carpet, or just decided to let go and move on, we turned our eye to more positive things, such as sports heroes, hotly anticipated movies, and lifelong learning; two Google doodles appeared in the top 25 for the first time since the beginning of August."

Relisting
Hello again, as far I remember, I have told you about relisting few weeks ago but I repeat in case you forgot. You have relisted an AfD for a third time. According to WP:Relist, a second relist is enough in normal cases. Note, a relist is not a substitute of "no consensus". In rare controversial cases a third relist is possible, but one has to provide a relisting comment i.e. reason for relisting for a third time. Anyway, I hope all is well with you. Have a nice day! Jim Carter 20:07, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- Jim Cartar: I assume you are referring to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jeffrey Eisenach. I only relisted because it was a very old discussion with no clear direction established. If there had been proper arguments to keep or delete, a no consensus close would've been my choice, but I wanted to give people more time to comment. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews
Hello Rcsprinter123/Archives. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.
The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.
If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)
If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.
Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Would you have any suggestions?
A few months ago during the eventually unsuccessful Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Piotrus_3 you voted "neutral". I wonder if you'd like to discuss any concerns of yours, or if you would have any suggestions in the event I'd decide to run again (which I am not planning to do anytime soon, but might consider in the future). For a better sense of my work and activities around the project, I invite you to consider reviewing my userpage, my talk page archives (which are not redacted), to watchlist my talk page, or use edit analysis tools like Wikichecker, content.paragr, dewkin, xtools-pages or xtools-ec (which in theory should work as of late 2014...). I understand your concerns about canvassing, and I hope I understand that policy better now - I would be more than happy to chat about it if you'd like to query me on it now. I also do wonder about your comment "having to run for RfA three times...". Would this mean that you would have a policy of not supporting any candidacy that goes up for consideration if the candidate was unsuccessful two or more times before? Thank you for your time, (PS. If you reply here, I'd appreciate a WP:ECHO or {{talkback}} ping). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:04, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...
Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.
- We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
- In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
- The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. Strange thing on AfD
Hi! I was looking at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Waterfront Elementary School and saw a note that it was included in the list of Schools-related deletion discussions, but when I went to the list, it was not there. Thanks for all your efforts! Jacona (talk) 13:59, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- That's unusual; I suppose that when deletion sorting I must have closed the AfD before my delsort script had had time to add it to the list. I've now added it to the Schools list. Thanks for pointing this out! Rcsprinter123 (push) @ 14:03, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Cartography and copyright
Hi there fellow cartographer. So, I was looking at one of the maps you made and I noticed that you did not provide attribution for your data layers. Where did they come from and what is the copyright status of them? --Guerillero | My Talk 20:19, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- Guerillero: Those maps are sourced from U.S. Census Bureau data, which as a work of the U.S. federal government, is in the public domain. This means I can use it to make other graphics from, and upload them on Commons. I should get round to adding a source, but that isn't a requirement especially as none of the original map appears in the image. Rcsprinter123 (discuss) @ 20:53, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- While legally that is true, the best practice is to cite your sources. This is because there is creativity in the data itself. When I digitize, I make judgment calls over edge cases that another person on my team might make in the other direction. --Guerillero | My Talk 21:34, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- I provided a source on this image; would that format do for all future uploads? Rcsprinter123 (utter) @ 21:41, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey Rcsprinter (admission of shame: After reviewing your userpage, I have been pronouncing your name wrong this whole time...so sorry!) I wanted to ask if you might be interested in mentoring one or more editors during our pilot of the mentorship space called the Co-op. We plan to run the pilot in late January for about one month. The idea is that mentors will be doing one-on-one teaching based on how an editor wants to contribute, and it's not some huge commitment to teach/learn comprehensively about Wikipedia. We also want to make to easier for new editors to find mentors as well. Your experience adopting editors already will definitely be useful for new editors just getting started. If you're interested, please sign up here and feel free to peruse, make suggestions, or ask questions about how the Co-op will work. Thanks a bunch (and Happy New Year!) | I wanted to let you know that I looked in on your RFA yesterday and was impressed with your body of work. Your contributions are impressive, and appreciated.
It's disappointing that adminship is regarded as such a big deal that editors are unwilling to extend it to tireless, good-faith contributors such as yourself. But try to remember that it's really not a big deal: you can still get everything done that you set out to do without pushing twirly buttons of your own. Just keep doing exactly what you're already doing. Your contributions are valuable. HiDrNick! 14:50, 30 December 2014 (UTC) |

Is there any way that entry in b-log can be redacted ? We will have clueless folks in any future rfas too, and that entry will always be creating an unfair disadvantage for you. It is clear that lots of folks cannot read the unblock message on their own.OrangesRyellow (talk) 02:12, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Block logs can be redacted, it is very rarely done - only in extreme circumstances. In this situation, hiding the past is not best solution - because there will always be people who are able to see what is hidden and will ask more questions. Better would be for Rcsprinter to be open that he made a mistake and be upfront about it in the next RfA. Remember Wikipedia favours transparency. WormTT(talk) 08:40, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Pardon me for not being very clear. I don't want that his whole block log be redacted. I only want one block, which was undone saying that that block should not be held against him. People still seemed to be holding it against him, voting on that basis, and questioning him on that again. He has been found innocent for that. And it is obvious that even though innocent, some folks will continue to vote against him despite him being innocent because the voter did not bother to read the unclock rationale, and apparently caused an irreversible pile-on. I want to avoid a repeat of this. That is why I feel that part of the block log should be redacted. Regards.OrangesRyellow (talk) 08:49, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know whether "innocent" is exactly the right word there, because although I didn't do exactly what was stated in Philippe's block, I did make a few big mistakes that day that shouldn't have happened. Rcsprinter123 (soliloquize) @ 08:54, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed. I remember leaping into action at the time. I too wouldn't say innocent, but nor would I say guilty. I'd say he made a mistake - there's no crime in that, but accepting your mistakes and learning from them is a great asset to have. Hiding them away is not. WormTT(talk) 08:59, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

- I am not familiar with the incident. I had interpreted "should not be held against" as "innocent". However, if it was a "mistake" without being "innocent" or "guilty" either, I can understand why the entry should remain. However, I still remain with a feeling that it will create more than a due disadvantage because the nature of the block message is such that many people will not bother reading the unblock message. So, it is either a choice between having more disadvantage than is due, or creating more advantage than is due. I am in a quandary about which is more proper, and will leave it at this. Thanks for the attention and explanations. Regards.OrangesRyellow (talk) 09:12, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.
Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Trash Bag Bunch
I could use a hand with some edit warning going on with the Trash Bag Bunch article. You closed the AFD on this Nov 22 as redirect. The article's creator has reverted that edit twice restoring the article claiming that concensus was to keep. I've restored your redirect twice but this editor (the article's creator) insists otherwise. I've l left a note on the editor's talk page suggesting they open a new AFD if they disagree with the outcome, and would appreciate it you could share your thoughts there as well.--RadioFan (talk) 03:39, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- I've added a supportive comment on the editor's talk page, although I noted that Deletion review would be a better place for a new discussion since the user does not want the article deleted. Rcsprinter123 (warn) @ 15:53, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey, do you know what's going on with A. G. Cook? The AfD was closed as no consensus, but the message template didn't get removed from the article. I can't tell if it needs to be redirected. hinnk (talk) 04:08, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- Apologies, the automated closing script must've missed off removing the tag. I've taken it out now, and the article does not need to be redirected or anything. Rcsprinter123 (tell) @ 15:43, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

death report
the contacted persons seemed a bit lame on connecting with anyone else. I would have put a very different approach to what they have put up. The project was calling out for itself after user Good Ol'Factory created a vast sea of categories relating to death - he being one of the the front of the page is all you worry about people - - the death project was begging to happen. So inasmuch as anyone ever might say they create a project - the 'cause' was not adequately explained or acknowledged - the category and front of page people up there in 300k edits range may have created front space, but few if any ever go anywhere near the talk pages for project tags. So there is much more to the project than the 3 interviewed said. So be it. Also User:Pollinosisss should have been acknowledged as the death portal main editor satusuro 04:06, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- Satusuro: It's unfortunate that more people did not offer their opinion to the report, but I had to publish with what I had. As a member of the wikiproject, you were welcome to contribute also. I don't have huge amounts of time at the moment to do thorough investigations, so the quality of the reports may vary. I only apologise for not representing WikiProject Death better. - nah on closer inspection of my watchlist - I am at fault, my very very sincerest apologies - it (my watchlist) is simply too large - I missed your message at the project talk page ... sorry about that - also it is good as a report. I was being far too critical. What is good is that geniac acknowledged polinossis and good oldfactory, after my comment at the report page inside signpost. The actual scope development and refinement is something the project needs to re-examine down the line, and really, I am being far too over optimistic about what a report can do. In the end it was fine, my problem, not yours. satusuro 15:52, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Maps
Hi. How did you create these maps? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Maps_of_Caddo_Parish,_Louisiana I noticed that Plains, Kansas & Parkerfield, Kansas don't have a map similar to Meade, Kansas. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 08:33, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Sbmeirow: The map for Meade County, which contains Plains, had already been made but for some reason, Plains had not been highlighted and uploaded in its own file. I have done this and added it to the article.
- As for Parkerfield, I'm not sure, but it doesn't appear on the maps for the county so I can only guess that they used 2000 census data, and did not include Parkerfield which was incorporated in 2004. I have added it to the maps, and updated the article. Rcsprinter123 (parlez) @ 17:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks a lot!!! I've been looking for a fix for multiple cities in Kansas. Back when the 2010 census was released, I went through every city article for Kansas and cleaned them up, and I noticed at that time some of the maps were missing. I seem to remember at least one more city in northeast Kansas that is missing a map, I but I couldn't find it when I originally asked you this question. I still have a lot of cities to reprocess on this pass, so I'll get back to you in the coming weeks if/when I find it again. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 22:09, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- By the way, do nice maps exist for unincorporated communities, like Aulne, Kansas? I've been wondering if there was a solution to fix these types of articles. I'm not asking you to upload all the maps, but wondering if the maps exist or where to find them, because I'll do some work to fix the problem if I could find a way to create the maps or get access to the pre-made map files. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 22:09, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Sbmeirow: The maps that were made before I began doing them do not include unincorporated areas, although I don't know why - illustrators' preference. Although it would be possible for me to update them all, it would be a huge task, simply because of the sheer number of counties already covered. So, unless there are some particularly notable CDPs, whose counties could be done, it would probably be best to leave updating the thousands of maps. I don't think it would be possible for you to create them either, because the method of creation is complex and highly controlled.
- When you remember what the northeast Kansas city is, I would be happy to do any updating, as well as maps for whole counties that haven't been done yet (states OK, TX, NY, PA, MA, ME, NC, SC, VA, WV, KY, OH, LA, VT, NH, TN), on request. And I'm not even an American! Rcsprinter123 (blab) @ 20:12, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ottawa County, Oklahoma, including the following former mining towns for historical reasons Picher, Oklahoma and Cardin, Oklahoma. Tahlequah, Oklahoma - ugly map, college town, county seat. Cushing, Oklahoma - major oil storage hub town. I put watches on these towns, so I can do some cleanup after you add the new map. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 22:38, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
- Picher and Cardin, as ghost towns, do not have any actual borders, like a municipality or CDP does, so they cannot be included on this style of map. Tahlequah and Cushing are do-able though; I shall try to do them this week. Rcsprinter123 (cajole) @ 22:55, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
- Picher and Cardin existed in the 2000 census, even replacing the old city limits with a Black-Dot and larger Red-Circle would be fine, just like lots of tiny-tiny cities in Kansas. It's your choice, since I'm just asking for things. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 00:02, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- I've made a start by completing Payne Co., (Cushing), just FYI. Rcsprinter123 (palaver) @ 18:25, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, looks great! I went through all the communities in Payne County, Oklahoma and cleaned up all the articles. I noticed maps were missing from Mulhall and Orlando. Both sit on a county line, so maybe the map exists in the other county? • Sbmeirow • Talk • 02:17, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

I chose not to make Payne County maps for Mulhall and Orlando because those settlements are mostly in the county to the west, so they will appear in that county's maps when I do them. Also, it is a standard caption to put "and in the state of (state)" under the map, so this will not need removing. Rcsprinter123 (cackle) @ 21:15, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- I can set it back in other states, but I've been working on changing all cities in Kansas over to "Location within XYZ County and Kansas" and plan to stick to it, for 3 reasons: 1) to prevent wrapping to a 2nd line. 2) redundant information, because its listed as a state a few lines below. I leave the word "county" since those names are far less common than state names. 3) Americans commonly does not talk nor write "the state of" before the state name. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 14:20, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
Sbmeirow: I've done Ottawa County, that is Picher and Cardin, and made a note in the map caption that the city limits are the former ones. If you have any further requests in future, you are welcome to ask. Rcsprinter123 (articulate) @ 21:30, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
