Should the Great Famine be mentioned in the intro?
I think it should, in between all the other historical events. 96.89.123.89 (talk) 19:37, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

There is no such place as the "british' isles"
There is no such place called the "british' isles". Ireland has asked the world many years ago to stop using the term as it is highly offensive to Irish people, especially after 800 years of violent british oppression against the Irish in Ireland. Ireland fought for its freedom for a reason, not to be called 'british'. Respect that. Neither Ireland or the UK recognises that term and so therefore should not be used. Learn to be respectful of other people's wishes. It's shows intelligence and humanity. Thank you. 163.61.150.78 (talk) 10:38, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Good job then that the phrase "british' isles" doesn't even occur in the wiki page. Bibby (talk) 14:58, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- "Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles"
- Opening paragraph 2A02:6B6F:E415:4C00:4026:9E38:FB88:43ED (talk) 21:00, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- (sigh) It is very well documented that there is a group of islands off the coast of northwest Europe that includes two large islands and several smaller islands around them. The largest of those islands is known as Great Britain and the second largest is known as Ireland. Together, with all the smaller islands around them, the most common name for that group of islands, whether you like it or not, is the British Isles. If you want to discuss that further, the place to do so is Talk:British Isles/name debate, but unless you have some actual evidence for your assertion that there's "no such place", don't expect a lot of traction. - WP:NOTFORUM, plus this is an article about the island and landmass, not a country. Canterbury Tail talk 16:22, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Before that question could be answered you need to define an Immigrant, for example, is Mary McAleese defined as an Immigrant as she was born in the UK? Bibby (talk) 12:27, 7 November 2025 (UTC)

The term British Isles should not be used when describing Ireland. The words Britain and Ireland should used when describing the two islands together. The term is misleading, archaic nomenclature with colonial underpinning. British Isles is never used in Ireland or by Irish officials (Department of Foreign Affairs) or Irish governmental publications. Thd Irish government discouraged its use. Wikipedia please correct this. ~2025-37376-94 (talk) 21:05, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
Not done. Both countries are widely considered part of the British Isles for historical reasons. Please give reliable sources for the change first, then try to build consensus afterwards. NotJamestack (✉️|📝) 21:26, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
