I understand that in the wiki description, below the title, other terms (pogrom, genocide) are written. However, the title itself still implies the violence as "riots", implying a clash between two groups and this label continues to downplay the systematic nature of the violence. The terms used by the communities affected would be most appropriate to use.
Either the title itself should include all the terms used (i.e., 1984 anti-sikh riots/pogrom/genocide) to include all perspectives or needs to include a term all will agree on. Shelleydoul (talk) 21:36, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If helps...The events commonly referred to as the "1984 anti-Sikh riots" have also been described using a wide range of terms including "massacre, carnage, bloodshed, pogrom", and "increasingly"..."genocide"....Tiera, Silvia (2023). I won't argue with you on this however the whole reason it is not recognized as a genocide is because India denies it which in fact is a symptom of a genocide. MangotCupcake (talk) 03:31, 14 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It's not recognized as a genocide because it was not a genocide. It was a brief period of violence instigated by Sikh militants. The casualty numbers are nowhere near a genocide level. ~2026-64896-6 (talk) 03:21, 30 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
This is a false and propaganda statement in all forms. It was done by Indian mobs and Indian police, not Sikh militants. It was a genocide. The numbers are genocide level, many human rights activists and organizations point to this. It is a known fact that the Indian government reported a lower number on purpose. For the section “Recognition as a genocide”, there is a New York subsection which purports that the NY Senate recognized the Sikh Genocide but the source actually says that they recognize it as a massacre. They mention the word “genocide” once in the resolution claiming that other organizations and governments have recognized the event as a genocide, but they themselves label it as a massacre. Accordingly, this section should be removed.VonduB (talk) 22:52, 9 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It literally doesn’t though. It recognizes it as a massacre. Can you provide a quote from the source which substantiates your claim? VonduB (talk) 11:58, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is what the source says;
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body honors the strength,
resilience, and contributions of the Sikh community in New York State,
acknowledging their vital role in the cultural and economic life of the
State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body recognizes the contributions of
the Sikh community and commemorates the Sikh massacre of 1984 through
Impact and legacy:
On 6 November 2024, the 40th anniversary of the genocidal massacres, the 1984 Sikh Archive, an evidence-based free resource was launched at the Wiener Holocaust Library in London, developed to preserve victim's testimonies, images and videos, for the benefit of future students and scholars.
