Winschoten (abbreviation: Ws) is a railway station in Winschoten, Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Scheemda and Bad Nieuweschans in the province of Groningen. The building was completed in 1865 and the trains services started in 1868. There are currently two train services, both operated by Arriva. Among the direct destinations are Groningen, Bad Nieuweschans, and Leer (Germany). There are connections to eleven bus services operated by Qbuzz.
Location
The railway station is located at 53°08′21″N 7°02′01″E / 53.13917°N 7.03361°E in the city of Winschoten in the east of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is situated on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway, also called Staatslijn B,[1] between the railway stations Scheemda and Bad Nieuweschans.[2] The railway connects via Zuidbroek and Groningen to the rest of the Dutch railway network in the west[2] and via Bad Nieuweschans to the German railway network in the east.[1]
Building
The station building was completed in 1865. It is of the type SS 3rd class, which was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode.[3] Eight station buildings of this type have been built in the Netherlands, of which four remain today.[4] The building has a median risalit and wings on both sides parallel to the railway. The facade on the city-side and railway-side are identical, except for a half round decoration on the city-side. The doors and windows of the building have arched frames.[5]
Train services

Train services between Groningen and Winschoten started on 1 May 1868, and they continue to Nieuweschans (present-day Bad Nieuweschans) since November 1868,[1] and to Leer (Germany) since December 1876.[6]
The train services were first operated by the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (1868–1938) and later by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (1938–2000) into which the company was merged in 1938.[citation needed] As a result of World War II, there was no freight transport to and from Germany between 1944 and 1951, and no passenger transport between 1944 and 1954.[1]
The train services were operated by NoordNed in the years 2000–2005 and by Arriva since 2005, when Arriva bought NoordNed.[citation needed] Currently, there are two local train services (Template:Lang-nl) that call at Winschoten once per hour in both directions:[7]
- 20100: Groningen – Winschoten – Bad Nieuweschans – Leer[7]
- 37500: Groningen – Winschoten – Bad Nieuweschans[7]
A regional train service (Template:Lang-nl) between Groningen, Winschoten, and Leer is planned for 2018.[8]
Connections

There are eleven bus connections at the station, all of which are operated by Qbuzz, with the following destinations:[9]
