Meera Jasmine

Meera Jasmine (born 15 February 1984) is a National Award winning Indian actress. Several of her movies in various South Indian languages (Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada) were highly successful and critically aclaimed. She won India's coveted National Film Award for Best Actress in 2004 for Paadhom Onnu: Oru Vilaapam.

Biography

Meera Jasmine was born Jasmine Mary Joseph to Joseph Philip and Aleyamma in Kuttappuzha, Tiruvalla, Kerala, India . She completed her schooling in Mar Thoma Residential School in Tiruvalla. She currently lives in Panampilly Nagar in Kochi (formerly Cochin).

A chance meeting with Malayalam screenwriter Lohithadas gave way to her debut in Malayalam Cinema through the movie Soothradharan. She assumed the screen name "Meera" Jasmine, reportedly out of her fascination for Meera, a mystical devotee of Lord Krishna.

The phenomenal success of her first Tamil movie, Run, made her a major star. She followed it up with Tamil movies with big stars and reputed directors, including Mani Ratnam's Ayutha Ezhuthu.

In the meantime, she continued doing meaty roles in Malayalam movies. Her crowning glory came with the National Award for Best Actress in 2004.

Meera Jasmine entered Telugu cinema with Ammayi Bagundi and Gudumba Shankar, with the former becoming a success as well as earning her rave reviews. She cemented her place in Telugu with another hit, Bhadra. She also made a Kannada appearance in the 2004 hit Mourya, co-starring with young superstar Puneeth Rajkumar.

Her National Award and her burgeoning reputation as a performing actress meant she decided to choose only good roles. She re-entered Tamil cinema with Kasthoorimaan and Sandaikozhi. After the roaring success of Sandaikozhi, she became a rage in Tamil cinema once again, with the song, "Dhavani Potta Deepavali", eulogising her, at the top of every chart.

Her recent Malayalam release, Rasatantram, has earned her rave reviews and has turned into a superhit. Her latest Tamil release Mercury Pookal is also a success, and she has landed prestigious offers with Balakrishna in Telugu and Kamal Hassan's magnum opus Dasavatharam.
