Contributing Factors lacking
there is no mention to the explicit link between mental illness and shooting. our societal shortcomings also lead people to that, and the media's treatment of shootings. all well documented 68.206.97.197 (talk) 16:30, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- The "Perpetrator suicidality" section heavily covers mental illness and the "Sociocultural factors and perpetrator life histories" section covers socio- factors and media treatment. O3000, Ret. (talk) 19:00, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
lede does not reflect body
As the lede reads today, it does not reflect the body. The lede mainly recounts the different rates and frequencies by different observers of differing time periods, which confuses the reader. It even contains data not present in the body! Given the July 26, 2023 publication in JAMA (Characterization of Mass Shootings by State, 2014-2022) I will add these most recent findings and copy edit lede. I will remove a sentence that does not even belong there "The Federal Bureau of Investigation designated 61 events as active shooter incidents in 2021." Wuerzele (talk) 16:02, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Table caption to exclude perpetrator(s)
@Neiltonks:@Filmssssssssssss:I could not ping the editor because of the IP address. There is a revision proposed at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mass_shootings_in_the_United_States&diff=1182863594&oldid=1182794237 to add "(excluding perp.)" at the table capture; however, the cell value already have mentions about the perpetrators; maybe we will not enlarge the caption to make it multiline, but will add a small footnote that otherwise explicitly indicated, the amount of death does not include perpetrator(s)? The header is now ugly after the accepted change. See an example of such a table with footnotes at the table (below the table) at Intersex#Prevalence. Would you mind I will arrange the same way? --Maxim Masiutin (talk) 21:18, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Excluding Gang/Drug Related Shootings Is Misleading
I propose revisiting the criteria used in this article to define and include "school shootings." The current methodology appears to exclude incidents that are gang-related or drug-related, even when they occur on school grounds or involve students. This exclusion significantly alters the demographic and contextual representation of school shootings in the U.S.
Such an exclusion appears arbitrary and potentially misleading, as it removes a substantial portion of incidents that fall under a common-sense understanding of what constitutes a school shooting. If the article instead adhered to a logically consistent, inclusive definition, counting all shootings on school property regardless of motive, it would offer a more accurate reflection of the scope, frequency, and demographic distribution of these events.
In the interest of neutrality, completeness, and intellectual honesty, I suggest we update the article's inclusion criteria to reflect the full range of incidents typically associated with school gun violence. This would ensure the article remains informative and free of any inadvertent bias resulting from selective data usage. 108.88.197.8 (talk) 22:01, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- The article focuses on mass shootings, not school shootings. Dimadick (talk) 06:45, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Excellent sources to be exploited
For instance, articles in [1] should be utilized in order to make the article more comprehensive. RekishiEJ (talk) 15:01, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

In the last paragraph of the "Frequency" section, the definition of a mass shooting used by the "Everytown for Gun Safety" organization is stated as "any incident in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter". This is wrong according to https://everytownresearch.org/mass-shootings-in-america/ and should be "any incident in which four or more people are shot and wounded or killed, excluding the shooter", as stated on the linked website.
The website explains that "in earlier versions of this report, Everytown defined a mass shooting as any incident in which four or more people were killed, excluding the shoote", but the average number of 463 mass shootings per year between 2015 and 2022, as stated in the Wikipedia article, clearly refers to the new definition including wounded victims. ~2025-40375-87 (talk) 15:28, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
