The Sheffield Ice Sports Centre was an ice rink in Sheffield, England. It was operated by the Rank Organisation from 1964 to 1990, Icesport Management Services Ltd from 1991 to 2003, and, finally In-Line UK, until its 2005 closure.[1]

Silver Blades

Originally, the rink was home to two skating clubs; the Sheffield and Hallamshire Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club, and the Sheffield Post Office Sports Club.[1] In 1970, the rink was at risk of closure, this was opposed by protesters. [2] In 1975, an ice hockey team, the Sheffield Lancers were formed, based in the rink, [3] plus a "second team", the Knights. In 1979, the Sheffield Ice Hockey Club formed a third team, the Sheffield Saracens. Various teams were formed and dissolved over time.[1]

Relaunch as Sheffield Ice Sports Centre

By the late 1980's, the rink fell into financial difficulties and was closed in April 1991. Icesport Management Services Ltd, backed by Sheffield City Council, then convinced Rank to allow them to reopen the rink and secure a lease to operate it.[1]

Final closure

The opening of iceSheffield in 2003, with its superior facilities, took customers away from the rink and it was sold to In-Line UK, retaining the ice rink, but transforming into a multi-purpose entertainment arena. In the Summer of 2005, it was transformed into a roller rink, with plans to resume ice skating in the Winter. This never came through as competing with iceSheffield could never be financially sustainable.[1] The bulding still stands, housing the still operating roller rink, along with a branch of Grosvenor Casinos.
