Update 2024 election under U.S. Senate to include election results and changing to past tense Oneggs (talk) 02:13, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
Done I did a very bare-bones update, but at least it's current. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 17:13, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

The current list of people calling for Gillibrand's resignation only includes Mehdi Hasan, who is a journalist. The elected officials calling for her resignation should also be referenced. I don't know everyone who's called for it, but two NY electeds I've seen:
NY State Senator Jabari Brisport calls her comments "absolutely disgusting, racist, and defamatory" and also calls on her to resign.
https://x.com/JabariBrisport/status/1938418007102869884
NY Assemblywoman Claire Valdez likewise calls for her to resign, saying that Sen. Gillabrand "needs to represent all New Yorkers. Since her racist spiral proves she can’t do that, she should resign."

Here's a mockup of what the insert would look like (it could be shortened. I imagine the list will eventually get unweildy if more calls keep rolling in)
Gillibrand has also faced calls to resign in the wake of this incident, including from Mehdi Hasan, who stated "I think [Gillibrand] should resign for falsely smearing Zohran Mamdani as a terrorist",,[1] New York State Senator Jabari Brisport, who called her comments "absolutely disgusting, racist, and defamatory", saying "She should resign",[2] and New York Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, who said that Sen. Gillabrand "needs to represent all New Yorkers. Since her racist spiral proves she can’t do that, she should resign."[3]

Not done: Per WP:UNDUE and WP:NOTNEWS. We don't need to quote every politician's response on social media; wait for reliable secondary sources to cover the controversy. Day Creature (talk) 18:46, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Surely even adding something as minimal as, like:
- Gillibrand has also faced calls to resign in the wake of this incident, including journalist Mehdi Hasan, who stated "I think [Gillibrand] should resign for falsely smearing Zohran Mamdani as a terrorist", as well as some New York elected officials.
- wouldn't go amiss, since it's odd to only include or mention a journalist when multiple NY electeds have called for her resignation. 2600:4040:7FB4:9900:645B:7804:F0D0:AF77 (talk) 20:36, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Are there reliable secondary sources that have covered the elected officials calling for her resignation? The paragraph in general needs much better sourcing. Day Creature (talk) 22:17, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Apologies if formatting or protocol is incorrect; I am a new editor.
The passages describing Sen. Gillibrand’s statements on the Brian Lehrer show (under the subheading ‘Accusations of Islamophobia’) contain some imprecise language. Lehrer is misspelled ‘Leher,’ for example. The Senator called on Mamdani to ‘denounce’ rather than ‘refute’ the term ‘intifada.’ (If a paraphrase is called for, ‘repudiate’ is a better fit than ‘refute’).
But most crucially: although that same term — ‘intifada’ — remains the principal target of Gillibrand’s statements, the specific statement for which she was accused of islamophobia is the one in which she falsely suggested that Mamdani had advocated ‘global jihad.’ Responding to a caller, the Senator made reference to New York constituents alarmed at Mr. Mamdani’s candidacy (despite the fact that the collar in question was not, in fact, a New York constituent, but instead a resident of Jersey City, New Jersey). Senator Gillibrand said, “The caller is exactly the New York constituents that I’ve spoken to that are alarmed. They are alarmed by [Mamdani’s] past public statements. They are alarmed by past positions, particularly references to global jihad.” In fact, Mr. Mamdani has declined to denounce ‘global intifada,’ not ‘global jihad.’ It is Senator Gillibrand who supplied the latter, more inflammatory term, leading to accusations of islamophobic bigotry. She amplified the error by further suggesting, “This is a very serious issue because people that glorify the slaughter of Jews, create fear in our communities.” The Senator did not offer any evidence that the Democratic mayoral candidate has ever ‘glorified’ such ‘slaughter,’ and there is no reason to believe any such evidence exists.

- A lot of the text in that subsection was just original research, so I removed it. The "global jihad" bit is in there now, with a source. WP:RS/P lists Rolling Stone as generally unreliable for modern politics, but in this case the article is straightforwardly reporting remarks from the episode, and it happens in this case that this is the publication that followed up with Gillibrand's office to get the "misspoke" explanation. - Oh, so much better. The section is vastly improved now, thank you. EyeofBalor (talk) 21:34, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
