Description
English: A “Pirates & Highwaymen” cigarette card published by the W.D. & H.O. Wills company in 1925, number 16 of a series of 25, titled “John Nevison. “Swift Nicks” before Charles II.” The reverse description reads: “Said to have been born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, in 1639, Nevison started early on his career of thieving by stealing apples and poultry while at school; and by running away on the schoolmaster’s horse and escaping to Holland. On his return soon after the Restoration, he became notorious for his highway robberies. It was possibly during this period that he rode from Gravesend to York along the Great North Road, 190 miles in 15 hours, a feat ascribed to Turpin in Ainsworth’s “Rookwood.” This exploit is said to have reached the ears of Charles II, and to have procured “Swift Nicks” an interview with His Majesty.
