Using a YouTube video as a source for Hank Green announcing his cancer diagnosis
The news just came out and I forwent checking editing history before seeing that someone editing this page with that information using YouTube as a source had their edit removed because YouTube is considered an unreliable source. I'm sorry for my recklessness.
To avoid starting an editing war, I figure I'd start a discussion here.
While YouTube /is/ unreliable to use as a secondary source, isn't it fine to use the subject (Hank Green) as a self-published source given that he announced it himself here? Per WP:BLPSELFPUB and WP:BLPSPS. Cadenrock1 (talk) 15:45, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
- Per WP:ABOUTSELF, people speaking about themselves are reliable sources for themselves. The YouTube video is fine. --Jayron32 16:11, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
- Additionally, there are now several news stories about this, so we are more than well covered. Cerebral726 (talk) 17:46, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Cropped photos
@Strugglehouse Sorry for undoing your crops. In both instances, I found them to be cropped too tight. For the infobox image, some of his hair was cut off, and the current version to me seems like an ideal amount of breathing room. With the photo of them onstage, part of the focus is that they are on stage in this photo, so having more of the background is a positive aspect of it. Cerebral726 (talk) 15:16, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Cerebral726 Okay, that's fine. I probably didn't crop them very well. Strugglehouse (talk) 15:19, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Awesome socks club
Is there a reason for no article about the awesome socks club? It seems to merit an article. Sailcalculator (talk) 19:06, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- not seeing the kind of secondary significant coverage that would merit an article on a quick google search... theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 19:24, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
Inclusion of "Hank"
The introduction paragraph makes no reference to him going by Hank, but the rest of the article goes on to refer to him as Hank. The article is also named Hank. I attempted to add a note about this, but it was reverted. I have read MOS:NICK and this seems like it should be included. Why shouldn't it be? 2620:1D5:A00:5:BBE9:701:EB94:70AB (talk) 15:41, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hank is considered a common short form (or as MOS:NICK calls it, a hypocorism) for Henry; thus, the style at Wikipedia is to give the full legal name in the opening sentence but the common name in the title and elsewhere in the article. Unlike non-obvious nicknames, there would be no inclusion of "Hank" as a qualifier in the opening sentence in this case. Radagast (talk) 22:56, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- But his legal first name is William, not Henry Zenten (talk) 12:20, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- He's not alone in not going by his first name, many other notable people do. Those people's articles are formatted this way as well. Radagast (talk) 12:27, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think it's at all obvious where in the name Hank comes from. I understand (though it took me a second) that it comes from Henry, his middle name, but the MOS:NICK criteria are subjective, and, subjectively, I think that the way the article is written currently is confusing. The reader should not need to know esoteric English nicknaming practices to understand what it's saying. Spookyaki (talk) 01:48, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Journey to the Microcosmos ending
The Journey to the Microcosmos channel posted an official video over a year ago stating that regular production was ending. Per WP:SELFPUB, this appears acceptable as a non-controversial, self-attributed statement about their work. I propose a minor update along the lines of: “In late 2024, the creators announced that regular episode production would conclude,” with a brief note that occasional streams continue. Eawatling (talk) 05:58, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Added in. I'm not sure a note about occasional streams is needed. Thanks for the suggestion, feel free to WP:BOLDly add that sort of content yourself in the future! Cerebral726 (talk) 14:43, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
