Article assessment is the process by which articles are sorted by quality into the different quality categories. This page provides information on the assessment scale as well as the current practice of assessing articles.

Quality scale

The scale for assessments is defined at Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment. Articles are divided into the following categories.

WikiProject content quality grading scheme

As our project was only recently relaunched, we do not have a fully dedicated assessment team of our own. Any member of the project may independently assess an article on a scale of Start to B class so long as they check for the criteria. However, to ensure that assessments for Good, A & FA/FL are done by an independent third party, it is most likely necessary that we request the input of a Wikipedian outside of WP:WPLR when seeking to promote an article to one of these assessment categories.

Status Template Meaning of Status
Top {{Top-Class}} This article is of the utmost importance to this project, as it forms the basis of all information. This includes subject itself or articles intimately related (Example: List of states with limited recognition and UNPO)
High {{High-Class}} This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge. This includes country articles on states with limited recognition (Example: Transnistria)
Mid {{Mid-Class}} This article is relatively important to this project, as it fills in some more specific knowledge of certain areas. Most articles in this project fall into this classification.


  • Culture, war, history, geography or environment (Example: History of Somaliland)
  • Proto-states which may be described as unrecognized countries but are not included in the list of states with limited recognition (Example: Republic of Logone)
  • De facto unrecognized states or entities whose status as a state with limited recognition is ambiguous (See States with limited recognition#Excluded entities)
  • Former country articles on former states with limited recognition which may or may not continue to seek independence (Example: Republic of West Papua)
  • Articles of subjects that fall under the scope of this WikiProject but are not explicitly identified as belonging to a specific classification should be marked as mid importance. If you are uncertain when assessing, leave the importance field empty so another editor may assess its importance.
Low {{Low-Class}} This article is of little importance to this project, but it covers a highly specific area of knowledge or an obscure piece of trivia. This article regards unrepresented peoples or nations or highly specific aspects of their cultures, or subjects on the outskirts of this project's scope such as independence movements which may be active but have not resulted in the establishment of an existing proto-state or de facto sovereign state.
  • Specific or individual aspects of culture (Example: Music of Kosovo)
  • Articles regarding individual national symbols (Example: Coat of arms of Ossetia)
  • Former country articles with historic significance to current states with limited recognition (Example: Kingdom of Abkhazia)
  • Articles relating to independence movements or separatist organizations that have not yet materialized into a de facto state (Example: Basque nationalism)
Unknown Empty This article is of unknown importance to this project. It remains to be analyzed. Leave the importance field empty when assessing an article to identify its importance as unknown; this allows other editors to assess it themselves.
Excluded N/A Excluded subjects should not have this WikiProject's template on their talk pages.
  • Micronations are not under the scope of this WikiProject and should instead receive the {{WikiProject Micronations}} template rather than the Limited Recognition template.
  • Entities that may possess territories but are universally and unambiguously considered terrorist organizations rather than unrecognized states do not fall under the scope of WP:WPLR and should not receive any rating or category. (Example: ISIL)

Only in circumstances when unrecognized states, proto-states, or independence movements are also part of an article's subject should the article be identified as being part of WikiProject Limited recognition. For example, articles regarding conflicts or battles between Rojava and other parties are acceptable.
