Category:Relations of Japan and its former colonies

Nominator's rationale: delete, Korea was annexed by Japan rather than a colony (or initially it was a protectorate). Marcocapelle (talk) 21:38, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This and the two nominations below are follow-up on this earlier discussion. @An anonymous username, not my real name, Seefooddiet, Sm8900, HouseBlaster, and Voorts: pinging contributors to that discussion. • I am not sure on whether all individual instances of Japan's conquests can be termed colonialism, but shouldn't the fact that the overall phenomenon is called the Japanese colonial empire mean something? Even if the category has to be renamed, it seems thematically and chronologically in line with the similar categories pertaining to European colonizers. Category:Relations of Turkey and its former colonies

Nominator's rationale: delete, neither of the four entries is about proper colonies. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:26, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Relations of Russia and its former colonies

Nominator's rationale: delete, neither of the three entries is about proper colonies. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:18, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • There most likely will have to something like this category to talk about relations between Russia and the other post-Soviet states. Perhaps it is better to rename than to delete the category. GreekApple123 (talk) 21:24, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Organizations of former colonies

Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only the Commonwealth of Nations in it, which is already in Category:Relations of the United Kingdom and its former colonies. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:09, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Categories in fiction

Nominator's rationale: rename, these are set categories containing articles about fictional works rather than topic categories containing articles about literature. This was a WP:C2C nomination at WP:CFDS and as such opposed by User:HandsomeFella. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:21, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename all No objection to widening the scope per your suggestion, but it is "the opioid epidemic", a singular event. Dimadick (talk) 08:59, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed on "the" (I went ahead and added it, please feel free to revert).
That said, I think each of these may need to be pruned once renamed, as not all the entries are "about" the topic - which is presumably why we have this naming standard: to prevent category bloat of mere mentions. In the case of the opioid epidemic one, what is likely left after purging might be better just merged to the parent (about opiods). - jc37 23:41, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:2020s Chinese film stubs

Category:Jacksonville Jaguars draft picks

Nominator's rationale: There's not a draft picks cat for any other NFL team. This is basically covered by Category:Jacksonville Jaguars players. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:25, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Delete How is this defining for these players? Dimadick (talk) 09:00, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Next Generation Adelaide International

Nominator's rationale: Tournament changed its name several times, but the main article is at Australian Hard Court Championships. See also Brisbane_International#History. Although it may be eligible for Speedy renaming, this case not entirely clear, so I've nominated it here in order to keep a record of any discussion. – Fayenatic London 15:37, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Lists of West German people

Nominator's rationale: upmerge for now. there's only one page in here, which isn't very helpful for navigation SMasonGarrison 12:50, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Turn of the 20th century

Nominator's rationale: Non-defining category redundant category. SMasonGarrison 12:48, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory and one article. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:05, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Disasters in Denmark by year

Nominator's rationale: WP:OCYEAR. It is not useful to diffuse disasters in Denmark by year or decade. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:21, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Terrorist incidents in Denmark in the 1980s

Nominator's rationale: WP:OCYEAR. It is not useful to diffuse terrorist incidents in Denmark by decade. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:11, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Fictional prisoners and detainees

Nominator's rationale: Suggested by jc37 on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 February 20#Category:Works set in prison. -- Beland (talk) 00:51, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, not a defining characteristic of a fictional character. If applicable the articles should already be in the tree of Category:Fictional criminals. Marcocapelle (talk) 02:31, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rather than copy-pasting, please just count my comments in the noted discussion, for this one as well. - jc37 16:46, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose As defining for fictional characters as for "real" people. Several of them are defined by spending many years in prison and having trouble fitting in to the outside world. Dimadick (talk) 09:03, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Being "detained" may be defining for some fictional characters, but not by all. It varies wildly by story. As I noted elsewhere, this is a trope for superheroes and their adversaries, as well as crime fiction in general. There's also the question of length of time. If you hold someone's wrist for a few seconds, you have detained them. And how much of a mention was it? A throwaway line by an author to explain why a character hasn't shown up until now - a not uncommon occurrence in soap operas. All of which suggests that this should be a list, to explain the differences. - jc37 00:02, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

19th-century terrorist incidents

Nominator's rationale: WP:OCYEAR/WP:NARROW. Not useful to diffuse terrorist incidents of the 19th century by year or location. –Aidan721 (talk) 00:51, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Aidan721: shouldn't we delete these as anachronistic? The articles are already in a Massacres category when appropriate. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:55, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Many acts of terrorism are not massacres, they are not a sub kind of massacres. Terrorism often does not kill people. (I don't even think we should have massacre categories but that's a topic for another CfD...) Also if reliable sources on the event from long after call it terrorism that's more reliable than sources near the event calling it terrorism. PARAKANYAA (talk) 01:06, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support idea of upmerging, but I disagree with Marcocapelle's idea of deleting them as anachronistic. Provided they are labeled terrorism by reliable sources looking back at the events it's not any less accurate than a contemporary source describing it as that - probably more accurate. Also oppose upmerging to "disasters" as not all terrorism is. PARAKANYAA (talk) 01:04, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • If not deleted, merge to decade/century terrorist incidents, per nom, and selectively merge to disasters categories per PARAKANYAA. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:42, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
