History

1985, United Nations declares the principles of justice for victims of crime.

1988, Canada prepares a statement of principles. Criminal Code is amended to include a surcharge applied to offenders for the benefit of victims.

1997 Alberta's Victims of Crime Act (Act) was proclaimed. It replaced the Victims' Programs Assistance Act and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act.
