I notice that the reference to Hascombe vinyard has been removed. I must admit I have never heard of the vinyard. Does it exist?
It certainly did exist in the mid-1980s, because I worked there as a student. It was then well established, and selling its wine fairly widely. However it may well be that it didn't survive. Jon C
Thanks, Jon. Do you recall the name of the place (the obvious choice of Hascombe Vinyard) brings up nothing useful on Google. Have asked my neighbour (a long-time resident) and she hasn't heard of the place. Chris
Well... I have done some research (I asked my Mum!) who tells me that it was indeed called Hascombe Vineyard, but that the receivers were called in, and it went bust - probably in the mid to late 80s. So it looks as if the vineyard is no more. It was located on the hillside to the south east of the village. Jon
Population
The infobox is showing the population in the 270s. The last census in 2001 gives the figure as 241. As this is verifiable and the 274 is a figure I can't find a ref for, will revert to the original for now 86.144.79.30 07:17, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Splitting proposal
I propose that the section about St Peter's church be split off into its own article as there is enough well sourced material and it overwhelms the village article. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 11:36, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- Murgatroyd49 Splitting or combining are not areas where I have experience, so defer to others. Might it be, that in the short term, effort would be better expended on developing the underwhelming sections?SovalValtos (talk) 20:48, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- Already considering that but I have the church article virtually ready to go. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 19:17, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
Village Green
A village green is mentioned in the lead but for the life of me I can't see where it would be, away from the built up sections it seems to be all farms. Unless it refers to the area around the church pond. Anyone have a better idea? Murgatroyd49 (talk) 22:03, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- Murgatroyd49 A starting point is the parish map [1] which restricts options. The National Library of Scotland OS 25 inch map of 1897 is of interest as it shows what I think a walkers group [2] are referring to as Hascombe Village Green as being then a larger soggy area!. The parish council or other local bodies might be where to find a source; planning areas etc. Perhaps 'Village green' should be omitted for now.SovalValtos (talk) 22:29, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- There is an area marked "playing field" on the parish map. I would assume that is what is meant. The village is effectively in two parts, the fountain area in the north and the church/pub area, about few hundred metres south. I was searching round the latter. The village amenities (spring, hall and playing field) are at the north end. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 08:38, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
According to the village website it is the area round the church pond. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 12:59, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- Village greens are loosely defined areas so I would be inclined to accept the area near the church pond rather than playing fields even if they were found to be common land.SovalValtos (talk) 15:17, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
