"Drive responsibly" warning at end of film

Forgive me if it's already mentioned somewhere, but the "Please drive responsibly" notice at the end of the film probably ranks a mention. I think it should be covered somewhere, just unsure where (maybe "Production"?).

I don't think that is noteworthy. It seems more like insignificant trivia, which is why it has only been discussed in those types of sources. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 18:00, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Potential factual error and proposal for rewriting the article

I was leisurely reading the article just now and noticed that both the lead and filming sections mentioned that DS was filmed in Hong Kong. As a Hongkonger, I found this very strange because I do not believe the Hong Kong sanctum scene was shot anywhere in Hong Kong. I did a Google search, and most of the sources that mention Hong Kong as a filming location, albeit some are reliable, were published after Hong Kong was listed as one of the filming locations in our article. I am concerned that it may be a case of WP:CIRCULAR. (For example, this Tatler Asia source published on 18 November 2018,[1] when we already listed Hong Kong as a filming location.)

So I looked into the two sources that "backed" this claim. The first (source #2) is an official announcement from Marvel.com about the filming commencement in November 2015, which is promising. It seems to be true that Hong Kong was initially announced as one of the filming locations when filming began, as reported by Entertainment Weekly[2] and MovieWeb,[3] and local outlets like the South China Morning Post[4] and Oriental Daily News[5]. But these articles, as well as Marvel's announcement, were all premature and made in November 2015, before the actual filming commenced. The second (source #155) is a PDF file titled "Doctor Strange Fun Facts", which is simply a list of bullet points and lacks any markings or watermarks indicating it was officially published by Marvel. I have no idea what this actually is.

In a Ming Pao interview with Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton during the film's Hong Kong premiere, Cumberbatch mentioned that he did not shoot any scenes in Hong Kong. Instead, a filming crew came for location scouting and later replicated a Hong Kong-like street in a studio. He explained that various unforeseen factors, like weather, made filming in Hong Kong unfeasible.[6] This claim is supported by another interview also with Cumberbatch and Swinton in the Hong Kong Economic Times, which noted that although filming was initially planned for Hong Kong, the crew ultimately opted to rebuild a 570-square-foot Hong Kong-style street at Longcross Studios in London, using photos taken in Hong Kong for reference.[7] Profit Magazine mentioned that the production crew decided to construct their own set because it was too challenging to shoot on location in Hong Kong.[8] The Avenue of Stars's official Facebook page, managed by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, echoed this, stating that while the crew intended to film in Hong Kong, they found it too difficult after scouting locations and chose to build a film set instead.[9] Multiple local media outlets, like Time Out Hong Kong,[10] U Magazine,[11] and Sing Tao Daily,[12] also clearly stated that no shooting took place in Hong Kong. At this point, it seems reasonable to conclude that DS was not filmed in Hong Kong.

Since this article is a GA and I am proposing changes to sentences that date back to October 2016, I believe it would be better to start a discussion to gather feedback first. I suggest rephrasing the article as follows:

  • Lead, Principal photography on the film began in November 2015 in Nepal, before moving to England and Hong Kong, and wrapping up in New York City in April 2016.: Principal photography on the film began in November 2015 in Nepal, before moving to England and wrapping up in New York City in April 2016.
  • Filming section, Filming also took place in Hong Kong, and in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.: Filming also took place in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, and was initially set to take place in Hong Kong,[2][4] but the crew later decided to film at a studio after location scouting.[6] A 570-square-foot facade replicating a Hong Kong street was constructed at Longcross Studios,[7] inspired by the Temple Street and Lui Seng Chun building.[10]

Even cooler for us Hongkongers, the final battle scene took place right here in the 852. Sadly, none of it was actually filmed here as the fight sequences would have required complete control of the street to shoot what was desired – something not permitted. Instead, the filmmakers recreated a large-scale facade of a regular Hong Kong street – with inspiration clearly taken from Temple Street and surrounding Kowloon neighbourhoods. The Hong Kong sanctum in the scene is, indeed, based on the historic Lui Seng Chun building in Prince Edward.

Based on your research, and double checking the film's credits where I didn't see any mention of Hong Kong, I would support updating the article. The filming section does already note the Hong Kong street set so we would want to integrate the changes with the existing information slightly differently from how you have suggested. - adamstom97 (talk) 15:18, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this admittedly surprised me. I also think this is worth a mention to provide a degree of clarity. Trailblazer101 (talk) 16:26, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, it is true that the street set is mentioned in the previous paragraph, so we can probably omit that part. The main reason I am initiating this discussion is simply to raise this concern and provide some translated Chinese sources that may be helpful (as I have not seen any English sources except the Time Out Hong Kong source above addressing the cancelled filming in Hong Kong). I agree that my proposal is not the best worded and organized option, and I am open to other suggestions as long as they address this issue!
I agree with Trailblazer that it deserves at least a mention that Hong Kong was originally slated to be a filming location, rather than simply removing it, since many sources have listed it as such over the years and it requires some clarification. Otherwise, some editors might try to add it back using circular sources, believing it was an overlooked fact. ——👑PRINCE of EREBOR📜 05:47, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Adamstom.97 and Trailblazer101: I took Adam's suggestion to avoid the overlapping mention of the street sets and tried to rewrite the article as minimally as possible. (Special:Diff/1277944738) It would be great if you guys could take a look to see if it can be polished further! —👑PRINCE of EREBOR📜 16:44, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
