The article says Catherine "endorsed" variant spellings. That means she specifically favored variations. Is there any reason to believe that? Does any source suggest it? I would guess she simply "used" variant spellings as was usual at the time, and wasn't "endorsing" anything, so the article gives a misleading impression.
