==Personal life==

Velour was born in [[Berkeley, California]], then relocated to [[New Haven, Connecticut]] when his father began teaching Russian history at [[Yale University]]. Velour was raised in [[Urbana, Illinois]], and resides in New York with his partner, John Jacob Lee.<ref name=Urbana/> Velour has shaved his head ever since his mother, Jane Hedges, was diagnosed with cancer. He visits Russia regularly.<ref name=Urbana/>
