Talking statues of Rome

I really think you should consider merging these five articles into the talking statues article. It makes sense that a reader would want to read about them all in one article, I found it quite annoying personally having to click my way through each one just to read another paragraph, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one. Villa Medicea del Trebbio

I added your Villa Medicea del Trebbio to the next update. It will be on Main Page DYK in a few hours. --BorgQueen (talk) 21:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was just about to "tick" it when BorgQueen added it to the next update. Thanks for jumping through all the hoops. I know it's frustrating, as I've been there on several occasions myself. Alas, what is "common knowledge" to some won't be common knowledge to everyone - as DYK tends to avoid statements of the blindingly obvious (as they "lack interest") then citations are required each time for consistency. Regards, BencherliteTalk 21:35, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both, but it all seems such pointless rules-lawyerly box-ticking. The hook is an entirely uncontroversial point (and, indeed, widely known in the relevant field), and about half of the other sentences in the article could have exactly the same footnote, so why pick this one out?

Anyway, that is my Wikipedia time for another day spent advocating for my old articles rather than writing new ones. Perhaps the Villa Medici in Fiesole or Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano next. -- Theramin (talk) 21:49, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--Maxim(talk) 23:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you didn't like the request for the cite, but we do have rules and if we start making exceptions pretty soon the whole system breaks down. If it's any consolation you are perfectly welcome to remove the cite once the article is off the front page. The cite is basically only there to help reviewers confirm the hook statement and for readers who might be interested in verifying the claim for themselves. Hello, and thank you. Yes, I was welcomed before, but I blanked it a while ago (oh gosh, nearly 14 months ago - how time flies!). I am likely to be around a bit for a while, so I have reinstated my talk page.
It was rather odd for us both to try editing that one page at almost exactly the same time, but no damage done, I trust. -- Theramin (talk) 00:16, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I just assumed the blank user page was virgin territory. No damage done re the article edit--I reverted myself, assuming I had "edited over" your edit (an old copy of the page was still in my cache!), but I actually hadn't. Glad to hear you will be around a bit. Outriggr (talk) 01:50, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Er, thanks. To be honest, I doubt anyone is going to write an article on Maria Baroncelli (but you never know, I suppose); I don't care too much for the various templates you added ({{nofootnotes}}, {{orphan}}, {{refimprove}}; and the references were in fact the references I used to write the article, not external links. But thanks for adding some categories - I clean forgot. -- Theramin (talk) 22:33, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

I was going to review your Sargent DYK. However, just as you wrote, "this nomination procedure takes bloody ages. I doubt I will be bothering again", I found myself stuck at the reviewer's directions: "The bottom half of the nomination includes two lists of review points that you must check off". Of course I could follow the example of the other reviewers, but now I'd rather complain about what a convolution it all is. I fear that all of Wikipedia will eventually become like DYK; a bureaucratic maze of endless little policies that can't possibly stay self-consistent even if any human had the desire to follow them. Riggr Mortis (talk) 03:29, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed - two lists which you must check off. I haven't bothered with DYK for a about year (which is a shame, as it a good way to attract a little attention so I can be sure that someone has actually read the stuff I wrote and will hopefully correct the typos and other errors, rather than just slapping on daft templates - but then it is hard to believe that noone has edited Leg of mutton nude or Hogarth's Servants in the weeks since I wrote them). Ach, well, much of Wikipedia these days seems to involve some people telling others to do things, but few actually doing it. Sic transit gloria Wiki (as she said while editing in the back of my van). But thank you for your contributions. -- Theramin (talk) 23:15, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your copyediting. No matter how long I spend writing offline, something always slips through. There are plenty of similar articles that could do with a look-see (I still can't believe that no one has edited Leg of mutton nude or Hogarth's Servants, but perhaps they are practically perfect in every way).
A very merry Christmas to you, and also a happy New Year. I am reliably informed that things can only get better. But then some also say that there are hardly any topics that are missing articles these days. -- Theramin (talk) 02:47, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating the article on the "Past and Present" series of paintings by Augustus Egg. You've been doing sterling work, but I see from the above that you do know how to format a weblink, so please also do that with article references, which are not supposed to be left bare. Just say "National Gallery page" or something; ideally with "accessed June 19, 2012". Thanks. Johnbod (talk) 01:07, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Manet

Hi Theramin. Your edit to List of paintings by Édouard Manet‎ was certainly... different. It took me a moment to recognize that you are showing the relative size of the paintings, which is very useful but unprecedented in such lists for technical reasons, I suppose, which mainly are that my browser needs to be about 1500 pixels wide for the page to fit horizontally; and it makes the smaller works quite small. I don't want to revert it; obviously it must have taken you a while, but I wonder if there is another solution. Anyway, I've been hoping to fill in some of the Manet works and was glad to see the absinthe drinker added to the collection. Riggr Mortis (talk) 00:06, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bramshill House

If it's not too much trouble, Theramin, would you mind formatting the references you added to the Bramshill House article so that they conform to the style of the other references? Thanks! --108.45.72.196 (talk) 04:14, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, 108. I would normally try a bit harder - I try to be reasonably consistent in the odd articles I write - but I have never got the hang of the various different citation templates, so I couldn't see much point in spending time trying to sort them out. Whatever style I used for references in this article would be wrong, and several people would want to change them anyway. Lazy, perhaps. Sorry. -- Theramin (talk) 01:05, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Whaam!/archive1 is now three weeks old and has now had over 250KB of discourse. I don't think I have ever been involved in an FAC like this. As I stated at the beginning of this FAC, Whaam! will experience the 50th anniversary of its first exhibition on September 28 that I hope can be celebrated at WP:TFAR. Before that, however, we must make a decision on the quality of this article here at WP:FAC. Please consider making a Support or Oppose decision some time soon.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 00:16, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Sphere with Inner Form has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No reliable sources suggesting notability. Mere museum photos and catalog listings are not enough to suggest that this work is, individually, notable. While the artist may be notable, notability is not inherited.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Joan Miró Global Challenge — you're invited!

Hey Theramin,
I've seen you've recently edited an article about an artwork by Joan Miró. I thought that maybe you'd be interested in taking part in the next international Wikipedia editing party. This event, called Joan Miró Global Challenge, will take place next 10th May, and it will consist of a 10-hour Wikipedia editing party, where wikipedians from all around the world will be welcome to edit together to reach the goal of making 10 key articles about Joan Miró and his artworks available in at least 10 languages.

You'll be most welcome to participate. Also, we would appreciate it if you could spread the word and invite the members of your community to participate. I thank you for your help in advance, and will be happy to help if any clarification is needed.

Best regards! --ESM (talk) 18:25, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Theramin (I like your username),

I just noticed that you added a link to this article into Head VI and then I noticed it was new. Would you mind if I nominated it at DYK? (I generally like to make sure that DYK is kept packed with boring hooks about uninteresting or banal topics, but it won't hurt to make an exception just this once). Now then, you appear to be a bit of an enigma; you've had DYKs in the past but although your articles are referenced they don't have inline citations (have you broken with DYK because of its rules about inline citations? Are you going to explode because I've brought the subject up? Or stare wistfully at a distant point and sigh so all your admirers believe you are pining for the days when you and DYK skipped laughing hand-in-hand down the Champs-Élysées? Or tell me not to be so silly?) Looks like you don't use your talkpage much either; I may have had a wasted trip; still, I wasn't doing anything (except drying myself after a bath!) Belle (talk) 01:00, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Do feel free to nominate the article at DYK if you wish. Holbein Gate is probably more interesting, though. I got fed up with the rules at DYK, so just get on with improving the encyclopaedia in my own way instead. Apart from the bots telling me to disambiguate, and sporadic threats to delete my occasional contributions, I just haven't had much occasion to use my talk page recently, so welcome :) -- Theramin (talk) 22:34, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Holbein Gate: more interesting but less popular (Hello Internet, do you prefer a sketch of a building or a naked woman?) I'm afraid I will have to convert some of your references to inline citations to meet DYK's requirements (so it will end up looking less attractive and more "official", but that's the way the tide is moving, what are you going to do?). Belle (talk) 00:07, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So, defaced with lots of little numbers and nominated. (I may raid your contributions again, be warned! You can always change your username or go into hiding) Just one incy-wincy little query. You say it was exhibited at Galerie Boussod et Valadon in 1888, but that doesn't seem to be in any of the sources and the article it redirects to, Goupil & Cie says that the stock of the gallery was sold in 1887 (whether that means the gallery was closed isn't clear, but it doesn't say anything about Theo Van Gogh having an exhibition there). Whinge whinge whinge. 09:24, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
