Romaizah Mohd Salleh (Template:Lang-ms) is the current Minister of Education (MoE) since 2022,[1] the Chairperson of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Council members,[2] Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD),[3] and Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA).[4] She previously holds the position of Deputy Minister and Acting Minister of the same Ministry in 2018.[5][6]
Political career
The 10th Joint Working Group (JWG) Meeting between the education ministries of Singapore and Brunei was held yesterday at the Radisson Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan and was hosted by Brunei's MoE. Permanent Secretaries Romaizah and Chan Lai Fung jointly presided over the meeting on 3 August 2017.[7] Later in a ceremony conducted at the Marriot Tang Plaza in Singapore on 14 July 2017, Brunei, who had served as the ASEAN Schools Sports Council's (ASSC) President for the years 2016 to 2017, took over the role of President for a two-year period beginning in 2018 and 2019. Romaizah, who was present in the capacity of a representative, then spoke.[8]
With the nomination of two women to the nation's newly announced cabinet, Hassanal Bolkiah's surprise titah, which was delivered on 30 January 2018 and was broadcast nationally by Radio Television Brunei (RTB), marked a crucial turning point in the nation's modern history. Following the appointment of the last female deputy minister eight years ago in 2010, the announcement of Elinda C.A. Mohamed and Romaizah's appointments as deputy ministers at the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Education, respectively, has restored female leadership in Brunei's highest government hierarchies.[9] On 9 May, Datin Romaizah, Deputy Minister of Education, and Motohiko Kato, the Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam exchanged views on bilateral educational cooperation.[10] The Brunei Darussalam Sports Schools Council (MSSSBD) delegation returned from the 11th ASEAN School Games, which were held in Semarang, Indonesia, from 17 to 25 July 2019, to a hero's welcome. Upon the group's arrival at Brunei International Airport (BIA), Datin Romaizah, the Acting Minister, welcomed them.[11]
It was announced that Datin Romaizah would replace Hamzah Sulaiman as the Minister of Education on 7 June 2022.[12][13] Thus, making her the first ever woman to hold that position in the Bruneian government.[14] The 2nd World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 14 to 16 November 2022. 2,500 participants from 150 nations, including 70 ministers of education, attended the meeting. Datin Romaizah attended the conference on behalf of Brunei.
