Pulau Sudong Airport is a military airstrip used by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) on Sudong Island. It has a singular asphalt runway of 7,999 metres (26,243 ft)[1] in length and is located 7 metres (23 ft) above mean sea level (MSL).[2] It is maintained by the RSAF year-round by a crew of workers that visit the island regularly.[3]

History

After the Singapore Armed Forces officially classified Pulau Sudong as one of its live-firing areas in 1989, the runway was developed a few years later by a construction company in 1994 called L&M.[4]

In recent years, there have been planned reclamations on Pulau Sudong in order to upgrade the single runway on the island to improve safety during emergencies for military aircraft, especially during bad weather conditions. This has raised concerns about the destruction of wildlife on the island, especially coral reefs, seagrass habitats and mangrove forests that house rare species of marine life in Singapore.[5]
