Nejat Society was founded in 2003 by a group of former members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran. Since its establishment, it has operated as a non-governmental organization (NGO), actively engaging in various initiatives over the years. The association consists of hundreds of members who contribute to its activities and mission. The NGO is often cited in books and press, although it has been subject to controversies surrounding misinformation.[1][2][3]

Activities

As part of the humanitarian efforts of mothers, fathers, and other members of the Bahar Association, family members of MKO members gathered in front of Liberty Camp in Baghdad, Iraq, in September 2013, demanding to visit their relatives. According to a report by IRNA, MKO officials allegedly prevented them from meeting their loved ones. The protesters called on Iraqi authorities and international organizations to facilitate the visits. Reports indicated that many families had traveled to Baghdad over the years seeking contact with their relatives, but some claimed they had not been able to communicate with them since they joined the organization.[4]

In June 2023, another group of Nejat Society members protested in front of the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, which represents Albanian interests in Iran. The demonstration followed the Albanian police raid on the main MKO camp near Tirana, Albania. The protest was directed at the Albanian government, which severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2022 after accusing Iran of a cyberattack.[5]

Controversies

Robin Corbett, Baron Corbett of Castle Vale describes Nejat Society as a front organization that spreads misinformation.[1][6]

French-Iranian journalist Armin Arefi said he was put in contact with Nejat Society to write "an article smearing the MEK’s image in France".[7] According to the National Council of Resistance of Iran, Nejat "was created by the MOIS for the express purpose of conveying propaganda in the guise of disclosures from persons who have “escaped” the Resistance movement."[8]
