General Bernardino Caballero (or simply Caballero) is a town and a district in the Paraguarí Department of Paraguay. It is named after Bernardino Caballero, President of Paraguay from 1880 until 1886. , and is located approximately 101 km from the city of Asunción, capital of the Republic of Paraguay, and approximately 30 km from the city of Paraguarí, capital of the department.

It was independent on August 30, 1901 from the municipality of Ybytymí by decree law number 299 by Italian immigrants under the presidency of Benjamín Aceval. The Gral. Bernardino Caballero railway station is located there.


Location

Caballero is located in the north-west region of the Paraguarí department, 101 km from Asunción, the capital of the Paraguay; and about 30 km from the city of Paraguarí.

To get there one should take the national route number 1 to Paraguarí, and there take a detour to Gral. Bernardino Caballero.

Geography

The district of General Bernardino Caballero has 162 km² of territorial extension and is located in the extreme northeast of the ninth department of Paraguarí, in it the topography is rugged, it includes hills that belong to the Los Altos mountain range or landslides thereof. It limits to the north with the Department of Cordillera, to the south with Acahay, to the east with Ybytymí and La Colmena, to the west with Sapucai.

The topography of the district is characterized by hills, streams and swamps. Borders are the following:

Hydrography

The district of General Bernardino Caballero is irrigated by the waters of the following streams: Costa Puku, Paso Pypucú, Pirajuvy, Caañabe and Paso Lezcano.

Economy

Its population is dedicated to subsistence agriculture and livestock farming. Regarding livestock production, they raise cattle beef, sheep and equine.

Agricultural activity is mainly oriented to production for consumption in addition to the cultivation of sweet cane, it also has cultivation of grapes, cotton, cassava. In its fields there are a variety of birds. In the district area there is forestry cultivation.

General Bernardino Caballero railway station, of the extinct Carlos Antonio López railway.

An important fully paved artery is the section that connects the departmental capital, Paraguarí, with Villarrica, capital of the neighboring department of Guairá, passing through the districts of Escobar, Sapucái, General Bernardino Caballero, Ybytimí and Tebicuary.

It has Copaco telephone services and mobile telephone services, it also has several means of communication and the capital's newspapers reach all places in the district.

To reach the town, taking the city of Asunción as a starting point, you must take Route PY01 until you reach the city of Paraguarí, 66 km from the country's capital. Starting from Paraguarí you reach Gral. Bernardino Caballero, along a branch that starts from the aforementioned route along Route PY02 until you reach the city of Itacurubí de la Cordillera. It is reached by a fully paved branch that departs from Route 2 passing through the city of Valenzuela on a journey of approximately 20 km until reaching the city of General Caballero.
