Summary

Description
English: Old tollhouse, Whiddon Down "The principal structure is thought to have been built for the Newton Bushell Turnpike Trust about 1826 in the form of a lodge house with angular front ...The three surviving tollhouses of very similar design, at Bovey Tracey, Moretonhampstead and Whiddon Down, were probably built when the road was turnpiked from South Bovey to Whiddon Down under an Act of 1826". This very useful account is at http://snipurl.com/smxak [www_flickr_com] . On the right is Turnpike Road, which must have then been the main road through the village from Moretonhampstead. The main road is the A382 which is now the through route for traffic.
