Kotpad Weaving: The Story of a Race Against Time is an award-winning English-Odia Documentary directed by Indian Writer-Director Biswanath Rath.
This documentary about Kotpad Handloom, dyeing and weaving has been produced by Public Service Broadcasting Trust in association with DD National. It had it's World Television Premiere on DD National on 24 March 2018. The film explores the uniqueness of Kotpad Handloom, the issues and possible solutions for revival of Kotpad Weaving and Dyeing.
The documentary features Gobardhan Panika, one of the master weavers of the craft, who was honored by the Government of India with Padma Shri in 2018.
Synopsis
Having originated from time, hitherto unknown, to holding a distinct place in the urban wardrobe today, Kotpad Handloom tells the rich and fascinating story of a unique, timeless textile tradition practised for centuries in the tribal region of Koraput (Odisha). An out of the world natural dyeing process followed by weaving of an awe-inspiring fabric adorned with nature-inspired tribal motifs is what brings global identity and recognition to Kotpad handloom. But are the factors making the weave unique also the very reasons of its languishing days Will such a tradition always keep standing the test of time The documentary tries to find answers.
